30d MSport (2012) recall - front prop shaft replaced but nsf backplate issue?

Post by 911X5 » Tue Jun 26, 2018 9:55 pm

Hi all

I got the recall letter to have front prop shaft replaced. They replaced it all fine and the car got a clean bill of health. However in the paperwork I noticed 'nsf back plate broken (rattling)' and have no idea what this means.

I do notice that the car does rattle and now I want this fixed as it can sound like a tin of cans driving it around.

Can someone decode what the problem is? I'm reasonably hands on and if its straight forward enough can attempt DIY or will just get a garage to fix it.

TIA!

The front backplates are actually 2 pieces of sheet that are fixed together. However the fixing method is a hole ithrough them with the metal peined over. These "joints" fail and allow the smaller section, which isn't bolted to the hub to move about and rattle/rub against the disc.. How do I know? Had this on mine last week. I just removed the loose section and will reaffix it to the other part when I get a min.

Thanks Mike - so is this a brake disc issue? So its wheel off and replace something? Can you let me know what the part is and I'll get it done because the front tyres need replacing anyway...

Its the metal plate that sits behind the brake disc. You can see it clearer when the wheel is removed. It wont effect the brakes, but as has been said, it will rattle if its become loose. In the good ol days they were pressed as one out of sheet steel...why complicate things??

No, it's the shield that sits behind the disc, and is fixed to the hub by the wheel bearing carrier. Realoem say it's discontinued for my car, but Ebay list them at £48 each! I'll be repairing mine thanks..

TIS will tell you that the caliper, bracket, disc and hub have to be removed to replace it, so labour costs will probably increase the job cost x 5 at BMW...
