2010-11 LCI 4.0D M sport
Hello readers
I’m about to buy a LCI 2011 M Sport 4.0D over a LCI 3.0 D M Sport. Has anyone on here bought or owned a 4.0 D? Any helpful advice or reviews please would be greatly appreciated.

I bought a 2012 40d and have enjoyed every mile! Definitely the right choice!

Hi
Have a read of the buyers guide in the E 70 section first off.
Also check if all the recalls have been done including the front propshaft which has been an issue.
If buying from BMW as an approved used car this should be easy, if not just give your local dealer a ring and give them the reg or Vin number.
Again with the LCI facelift the usual car checks apply but also check all elecrics work, tyres etc, and it has the spec you want, as retro fit on E70 models forward is very expensive to do.
You can always post a link and members of the forum will give you their opinions and may spot issues that you may not have noticed.

I would advise you to go one further and book it in for vch with your local dealer as I asked mine on 3 separate occasions about outstanding recalls to be reassured there are none. Luckily I own a garage and always do a full service when I buy a car and could see that propshaft will need replacing so for the sake of £28 I took is to BMW for vch and they replaced it as it was an outstanding recall. No explanation why they couldn't see it when I phoned them.

Thanks for all your posts and help. This is the car below which has a full BMW history and was last serviced and MOT in March this year.

Re: 2010-11 LCI 4.0D M sport
I don't see many optional extras - most of the items on the list are standard fitments on all X5s or come with the M sport package. Accordingly, the asking price seems high.
What is the tyre depth - check the wear on the inside of the rears especially, as well as the outside of the fronts. A set of new run flats is about £800. I see the MOT advisory notice shows problems with rear lamps - the gaskets of units fitted to the rear tailgate often give problems with water ingress leading to failure and the entire unit has to be replaced - not simply a matter of changing bulbs - cost well over £200.
And please pay attention to my namesake's advice - it is really worth following!
In addition, check your insurance quote - it will be higher for a 4.0d compared to a 3.0d, and more for the designation M sport.
Good luck...

Definitely worth while checking the tyres as these are critical on the X5. (something I wasnt aware of when making my purchase) BMW approved tyres are * marked on the tyre.
When I brought my 40D it had brand new budget tyres. I was quickly advised in this forum to get these off as there is potential to cause issues with DPF. I brought 4 bridgestone duellers which were the original supplied by BMW at a cost of £900. Something I hadnt budgeted for.

Noted on tyres, thank you.
I will check with the owner. All I know is they are run flats.

Re: 2010-11 LCI 4.0D M sport
what does a vch mean?
Re: 2010-11 LCI 4.0D M sport
Note, the choice of tyres is supposedly related to issues with the transfer case on the differential, not the DPF (which is an exhaust component rather than drivetrain). All down to possible differences with rolling radius between front and back on staggered setups (where the rear wheels are wider than the fronts).

Re: 2010-11 LCI 4.0D M sport
what is the need for having staggered wider rear wheels?
Re: 2010-11 LCI 4.0D M sport
I have a 40d LCI, with 104k on the clock. Had it for 2 years, remapped nice a quick but had a couple of big issues.
Firstly the camshaft decided to twist itself and sieze and knacker the whole engine, so a full rebuild followed - 3 months off the road.
Now the transfer case has gone and I'm trying to sort this out.
Apart from that I love driving the car when it works.

Common on "sporty" cars. Standard fit I believe on the MSports.....
