Looking for an E53 4.8is

Post by RoShamBo » Tue Jun 12, 2018 5:26 pm

All,

Been a while, owned a couple of E53 4.4i's the last of which threw a timing chain - and that was after costing me £4k in 18 months (gearbox, water pump, cooling system etc etc etc) - so over a year later back I am - for more punishment.

I am looking for a 4.8is and spotted a couple which - if anyone has any thoughts / opinions on would be greatfully received :

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-X5-4-8is ... Swz35bDuLU
seems too cheap ? 66k miles

https://www.woodhammotorgroup.co.uk/use ... 5317037975
or maybe this is too expensive ?

And yes I have been on this board long enough to know I will need deep pockets to run a 4.8.

Just...cant.....fight.....the.....urge.......

The eBay one looks to be plenty of money for a 2004 gas guzzler, interestingly on last years MOT it failed on (seriously corroded) front brake pipes, 6 days later they were ,miraculously just on as an advisory. Logic says that if they failed they would have been replaced yet 6 days later they are still there and only corroded -doesn’t make sense!
I mention this because it’s just cost me about £700 to get the 4.6 completely re-piped in copper. Make sure you check all the brake lines on whatever you look at as its common at this age and a good bargaining chip.

The other one looks way over price wise to me, other 4.8 owners may disagree!

Good spot ! And a little odd......
The Woodham one has only failed MOT's on windscreen / tyres / gaiter (v common from experience !) and brake pads, so consumables. The optimist says its a good one the pesimist says its holding on to all the major stuff going wrong for the next owner !

On close inspection you can see the brake discs are severely rough and corroded, owning a car is all about enjoyment, as you have stated has so,some else left the jobs for you ?
Through your past experiences I think you would be on edge waiting for the next 2/3 K problem to surface.
