Good wash and mini-detail
Good wash and mini-detail
With the weather being so good I took the opportunity to wash and give the car a good polish.
I must state I have no association with the provider of the polish and here’s the story.....
My car is now 20 months old and I’ve owned it from new. It’s space grey and has never seen a chamois leather or similar and I use good quality mitts and then once washed deionised water to rinse which is self-dry (and brilliant BTW). However I clearly use too much snow foam and other chemicals which became evident a few weeks ago having cleaned the car and the paint was dull. Not just ordinarily dull but if M&S made dull it would be M&S dull (and as we know M&S are best at everything!)
Forward on to a stand my company built at the London Motor Show this last week.....gratuitous pictures below
Anyway.......I got chatting to a chap detailing a car near our stand and he was using products by a company called Autobrite Direct and he couldn’t recommend them enough.
On the journey home I made a call to Autobrite and had a long chat with a chap called John who couldn’t have been more helpful. I explained my problem and he recommended two compounds. The first being a fine cutting pilosh the other a high gloss polish. Order was placed that day and products arrived the next as promised along with a free additional disk for my DA to help me.
Wind on now to today and I washed as normal but with no snowfoam or tar remover and the process was as follows:
Bear in kind I have little or no contamination or swirl marks but it needs a good going over.....
Full jet wash removing as much dirt as possible.
Spray an iron remover to the wheels, sides and rear. For those not familiar with this product it changes colour as it detects iron etc and then you simply jet wash off ASAP.
0
Full wash with soft lambs wool mitt and a decent car shampoo (I use Meguiar's Shampoo Plus). To be honest I rarely use the two bucket method as I wash off all the dirt I can using my jet wash and that seems to work for me.
Once washed I then rinse in dionised water and let it dry. Today I knew I would be polishing so I dried the car using a soft microfibre cloth after the DI vessel rinse and then got myself ready to make a start.
My polisher is a DA6 pro purchased some years ago from cleanyourcar.co.uk and I have been a little nervous using it hoping I won’t spoil any paintwork on the various cars I’ve owned. I was assured by the chap at Excel that a DA polisher was the idiots machine and that suited me fine )
I guess depending on the state of paint you might want to clay the car, in my case it’s wasn't necessary as the paintwork is very clean and contaminate free. I should also add it’s pretty much swirl free as well.
I used the following two products:
Correct IT is used first and then Renew and it’s as simple as the following:
DA every panel with Correct IT doing one panel at a time and then buff to a shine.
Once done I then used Renew and that’s very simple again using the DA and one panel at a time. Very easy to buff and no white residue on any black trim on the car.
The entire process took about 4 hours and the results are frankly astounding.......
Bottom line is I’m very happy and thanks for taking the time to read my Sunday washing story!

Re: Good wash and mini-detail
That does look stunning - such a great colour!
A bit of tyre gel would finish the look, though admittedly, applied to heavy and it’ll splatter the sides

Re: Good wash and mini-detail
Thanks
I don’t like using tyre dressing because I don’t like the entire car to look like new....... #confused......
Aside from the orange peel paint and various stone chips it’s looking like new again. Actually the polishing has removed a huge amount of mini stone chips on the front of the rear wheel arches which is a bonus.

No ceramic coating applied - to be honest I hadn't thought about that............... ??? is it worth it?
I've just ordered a mini DA machine to help with the front bumper etc. I'll also have a good at the door shuts etc. when I get time. My normal size one is just a little bit too big to get into some areas of the bodywork effectively.

Re: Good wash and mini-detail
Absolutely brilliant. You need to get it done before anything touches it, so there are no swirl marks etc. I use a foam wash and sheepskin mitt, and it is as good as new, 18 months later

Did you apply it yourself or have it done by a detailer?
Looking on the net it's not difficult at all.

Ceramic coating should be done by a detailer, it can go very wrong.

I still can’t believe how much difference a few hours graft and a polishing machine and the right polish makes!
