To do list

Post by DaveRob » Tue May 01, 2018 10:29 pm

I guess most of us here have a to-do list of jobs on the X5.

Here's mine.

Fit new front suspension components, hopefully to eradicate the horrendous braking wobble. I have the parts, and should be done within 2 weeks.

Fit new brake discs and pads, if the above doesn't work.

Fit a switched power supply behind the stereo to supply my dash cam and dab receiver, to stop the battery going flat if I forget to unplug them.

Remove the chrome on the front grilles.

Fix the pixel problems on the radio and the dash.

Fix the occasional three yellow lights problem, I guess by replacing an abs sensor.

Fit springs to open the tailgate fully when I press the dash or remote button.

Change the running boards to black (think this will look good on a black car)

Fit black, or at least smoked, rear lights.

I'm sure there's more, and the priority will change on some, but that'll do for now..

What about you?  Do you have a list?

watch them springs for the tailgate.  i dont if there are different types,
i saw a You tube vid from the USA and a link to order,  took 2 weeks and worked great for a while but now they just about manage to pop it up half way if that.

I reckon needs a stronger spring, anyone got any info on this,  mine are only around 8 months old and not had a lot of use so a bit let down by our US pals.

I just found some springs at work, I mean lying about on the street, and tried them. Not quite right, but it did make me realise that my gas struts are past their best.  I think with new struts they may work. It's low on my priority list at the mo!

ahhh    never thought my struts maybe worn  though they hold up the tailgate normally.

Would i be right in thinking    newer stronger struts would push it up further or the opposite and make it more difficult for the springs  :weakbench:

I thought my struts were ok, until I fitted the springs. Removing one strut, and the boot lid wasn't even close to supporting itself with just the one strut in place.  I think it should have at least had some effort at holding.

Guess my struts are on their way out. Hardly surprising,  as they're 15 years old now.

New struts will work with the springs, and aid the lifting of the tailgate.

I have the rear strut springs fitted, they came with some washers/spacers to increase the spring tension and they work well, only on the coldest days, like -c temperatures do they struggle to open the tailgate. I do intend to replace the struts this year with the ones sold by SGS Engineering which seem to have good reports.

Hi DaveRob,
With regards to your runner boards I hope you post up a thread. As its aluminium (I think) it might be possible to anodise them or did you have another path in mind like powder coat.

Ooh, anodised them? Hmm, hadn't thought of that, but that could be a great idea!  It'll be a while before I get to that item on my list, but I'll keep you posted...
