I remain on the fence regarding full electric power due to (a) the volatile cost of raw materials and high manufacturing cost of LI-ion batteries which will effect the cost of the car (b) due to the varying chemistry used by battery manufacturers there is currently no consistent re-cycling program.
I am aware that research is going on into re-use (second life) for these batteries but currently it seems the cost of raw material (even though most comes from volatile areas of the world) is so far below recovery costs plus the differing chemical technologies employed that it seems to me there is little appetite to actually recover and recycle. I believe at the moment Belgium has an experimental recovery plant sadly I am not aware of others but they are probably being developed.
Then there are practical considerations I looked at a Tesla G50 very impressive car but the reason I brought the X5 was for towing a horse trailer it seems range on the Tesla is seriously compromised when towing plus the thorny insurance issue.
Therefore if I change it will be a hybrid I think, I am sure they will get there but as I am mid 70's will it be soon enough for me ?? For now the X does its job

I agree with you ...of course most of the discussion relates to the new technology which I fear is at the Betamax vs VHS stage. Secondly I fall into a category of purchasers who are either approaching or beyond the three score and ten measure which we don't like to discuss... For these reasons in February 2018 I purchased the NEW G01 X3 in Diesel configuration. As a footnote I see Bosch have announced technology to reduce the current NOX emission of diesel by a further 90%...if this does prove to be as good as or even half as good as reported then the demise of diesel is not as sure going forward as many would have us believe.
