Do we care if diesel dies?

But this technology isn't going to be a retrofit for old cars. They're talking about saving diesel as a fuel for vehicles in the future, not saving existing diesel vehicles.

So if diesel eventually goes the way of the Dodo, what exactly will we miss about it? Just slightly cheaper running costs?

Having owned a 4.4 petrol X5, I would always buy diesel now, as I just want torque. Electric has torque but it is noware near practical yet. Ask yourself, how is the ‘grid’ is going to cope with 32 million cars plunging in at 5.0 pm every night? Just remind me how electricity is produced!

I have no issues with diesel.  There is nothing wrong with the engines or technology.  The issue is that the motor industry promised certain things about emissions and then failed to follow through with actually doing it.

Add in the successive Governments failed to come up with proper emissions standards and allowed the overly powerful motor manufacturers to get away with blocking changes on the grounds of economics and jobs - globally not just in one country.

Petrol engines now need Particulate filters because direct injection is far dirtier than indirect.

There are ways of properly cleaning all oil burning engines up, but it will increase the price of cars and the industry does not want to go that way and doesn’t want impact on it’s own profits.  Simple capitalism at its best.

I have nothing against diesel either, but what we're talking about is whether its worth making any effort to save it as a vehicle fuel source when there are cleaner alternatives.

I guess the question is, what is diesels selling point? If you want long range and fast refuel times, then clearly IC still beats EV (for now), but what is it about diesel that makes it worth keeping when we have petrol to meet that need?

I know the standard 'enthusiasts' mantra is that diesel is all about torque and 'in gear' acceleration, but realistically, what does that mean when most modern fast executive cars are automatics? These days, people press the 'go pedal' and the car works out the rest - it really makes no difference if it does it 'in gear' or drops a cog in a few milliseconds. Maybe 10 years ago it was nice to be able to press on without stirring the box all the time, but things have changed.

Diesel
Is always going to be around for the 32T stuff, trains and ships. It is never going to go away. With diesel curently demonised and sales plummeting, the polictical lobbyists might find a new hobby to focus on. Every lampost in the uk having an electric chargepoint for instance. Just as they finish Hydrogen should be ready to go.
I can see the short lull in diesel sales, maybe 2 year and I can see the oil companies getting behind this new concept as they want more than their investment back on the plants they have built and modified to produce the diesel sale forecasts promised.
Although I am not a fan of diesel, (V8 petrol will always sound better) it looks to me like it could possibly be wearing the comeback crown.
Diesel saved, albeit only in a modern form.
Maybe a retro kit might come to market.
It will be difficult to see what the market drivers are going to be in the short term.

I wish they they would think lpg as well . Although if too many got on the band wagon they would have to think of excuses to make it less attractive.
I still think it is one of the best kept secrets around.
(No London surcharge, RFL less, cheaper to run and less wear on the engine)
My 4.4 is on 94.500 and still does not use any oil between services !!
