BW Chiptune re-map - Feedback.

Post by philip600 » Sat Jan 15, 2011 7:43 pm

Hi everyone,

I got in touch with Jason through this website with regards to having my 55reg 3.0d re-mapped but as he is some distance from me he said I could take my car to a more local tuning company who would load one of his maps on for me.
Well today I had a trip to PD Tuning at Boldon ( near Newcastle ) where I was met by David, he downloaded the original map from my car, sent it via e-mail to Jason who sent a new map by return for David to install.
Job only took about an hour or so ( even though David was behind due to problems with a new VW Scirocco ) & off I set for the 40 mile trip home.
Early impressions are very good. Car is now more responsive & the initial flat spot when setting off has gone ( there always seemed to be a delay between pressing the gas & the car actually deciding to move which my wife hated, this led to her entering round-abouts in rush hour traffic at 5000rpm leaving a trail of diesel & tyre smoke :o )
Now it goes as soon as you touch the pedal but power is much more progressive.
Most of the journey back was 60 & 70 mph dual carriageway & I couldn't resist giving it some welly :driving:
Accelaration is now very rapid with a smooth power delivery, it just keeps pulling.
I had reset the computor before going & achieved 30.9mpg doing a steady 60 - 70mph ( we were early )
I reset the second trip before setting off home via same route & this was showing 31.4mpg when I arrived home although this journey was at 75 - 80mph & into a very strong head wind so I'm sure my average mpg will show an improvement ( one reason for the re-map )
I will update this post in a week or so to see how it compares with our usual mpg.
Overall though I am very pleased with the results so far, many thanks to Jason at BW Chiptune & the staff at PD Tuning, Boldon.
Regards, Phil.

Hi again,

just a quick update as promised.
Two weeks since re-map now & mpg gone from 22.9 average before to 24.3 now :)
This has been the usual trips for my wife to work & school run ( all 30mph roads )
Going for trip to Nottingham next month so it'll be interesting to see what it does on longer run but I'm very happy so far, should have got it done sooner.
X drives much nicer & over-taking performance is now fantastic :driving:

Hi again,
Well I've just returned from 240 mile round trip to Nottingham & well chuffed with MPG.
Had steady run down ( A19, A1, M18, M1 ) at 70 - 75 mph & obd trip showed 37.6mpg :)
Run back home tonight was a bit quicker at between 75 - 80 ( may have briefly hit 85 officer ;) ) & still showed average of 36.6mpg overall.
Acceleration from 50 - 70mph & when entering the motorway from slip roads is superb.
Even our normal average is staying above 24.5mpg so it's better all round.
Had a drive of my mates RR Sport 3.6 V8 diesel the other day ( before it broke down with alternator failure :o ) & X5 is quicker & more repsonsive, although his V8 sounds superb ( for a diesel )
I loved driving my X before but now it is fantastic.

That's good news. 8-)

Did you have a slight pause or deadspot before pulling away i.e. at roundabouts? Has this cured that if you did?

Yes, & my wife hated it.
There is a round-about on the way to where she works & in rush hour you need to be quick to get across. Because of the flat spot the X would hesitate before starting to move, only a split second but it was enough to wonder whether you would get out through the traffic, she countered this by flooring it in sport mode :o
After the re-map the flat spot/hesitance has gone.
The gear change, which was never bad but was noticable as it changed gear going through the box is now much smoother.
In conclusion, the X is smoother, faster & the fact that it does all this along with an improvement in MPG :driving:
Certainly worth every penny :)

My guestimate is that payback will be achieved in around 6,400 miles based on a jump from 29 to 36 mpg

Hi,
One of the reasons I got mine remapped was in the hope of improved mpg now fuel prices are through the roof :o
Most of our driving is around town & the average mpg for this has gone from 22.9 before to over 24 now, not a massive jump but better than nothing.
Best I ever got from a longer trip before was around 34 so there's an improvement there as well.
These figures are by no means scientific & are based on trip computor but there's definately an improvement in all driving conditions.
Factor in the improvment in engine response & increase in power I can think of no reason not to go for it.
I would imagine if I could have kept speed at 65 - 70mph on a long steady run I can see no reason why it could not have achieved 39/40 mpg.
For anyone thinking about a remap, go for it, I doubt you will regret it.
