I have a x5 e53 2002 3.0d was getting trans fail safe message
Fault that came up was steering angle so got a new 1 and I stead of putting that in and coding it I took it apart and replaced the broken part and put the original 1 back on problem fixed then the yaw sensor came up so replaced that then the fuel pump failed, replaced that now it won't come out of 1st gear so tried inpa it said no respons from gear box ecu gs19 sane for gear box control unit and dynamic stability control 4 wheel system so linked it up with Delphi cars and got a fault code 52 gear monitoring 2 permanent

Re: Bmw x5 e53 won't change out of 1st gear
Unfortunately that has a high likelihood of being an auto gearbox failure with rebuilding/replacing being your most realistic option. Could be box or torque converter. 52 gear monitoring indicates an internal box error though.
Best give a gearbox specialist a call, or talk to a BMW workshop and see what they think. Don’t get BMW to fix it though - they only replace and at silly money.

Either the software is somehow causing an issue (or it just plain doesn’t like whatever you are doing), or there is a real fault. Any fault codes being thrown?
If in doubt get a specialist with the right knowledge to check the codes.
A web search points at gearbox internal issues if the codes between 50 and 55 with the words ‘gear monitoring’ occur. It could be the box, or its controller which is under the bonnet on that generation.
