I’ve been a Knob!
Conscious efforts to mount wheel after replacing the air strut, torquing the nuts and knowingly leaving the locking wheel nut key whilst I put away the torque wrench
I left the locking key in situ!
Anyways, do bmw keep master keys or can they be ordered from chassis number

Aparantly there are only 6 variants of the key, ring your dealer, you will have to take it in and they will try all 6 and then either let you take one away or order one for you.

Yes Dealers do carry a master set.
Replacements are (were) about £30 and they’ll need to order it unless you are very lucky. My Dealer ‘mislaid’ mine after having the car in, but fortunately had a surplus one that matched in stock (uncollected Customer order).

I bought a 3 series a few years back that had the locking adaptor missing, went to my local dealer who brought out a master set which had 50 different master adaptors in it, went through them one at a time until he found the right one, ordered a spare, job done

Had to order one of these today as when I was swapping the wheels the locking socket seemed to go at an angle when tightening the last one. There is a couple of cracks in the inside next to the squiggly shape?? so thought it best to get a new one now rather than when I am desperate.
All they need is your Vin number and as long as its the original locking nuts thats on the car there is a record on the system.
I wont say what my socket number is but there must be more than 50 variants, and as said its about £30 for a replacement.

I was in touch with local dealer between Christmas & New Year
Checked as per chassis number and low & behold out of stock, key number 6? so there’s more than 60 types.
It’s on order and should take circa 2weeks, not the usual next day delivery I was hoping for....
However I maybe waiting for the wrong key!
The well known market site sells them, however I think I’ll wait for the Bmw supplied unit and keep the thought for an emergency, should the need arise!
On the premise of getting what one pays for and the market site is usually full of tat!

I am about to ditch my locking wheel bolts as one of them just sheared the top off while tightening it.
I was lucky enough that the bolt was not overtightened as I managed to hammer the end back on and remove it.
The bolt is a Mcgard that comes standard from BMW and is the ones with the spinning side.
It seems that these bolts are made of 3 parts and just pressed together. The bolt part gets pressed into the head part with the spinning side trapped between them.
Looking online it seems a lot of these bolts fail.
Just going to replace the lockers with normal bolts.
Anybody need a number 57 locking wheel key give me a shout.

I think I can add my recent experience for losing a wheel nut key...
I had my tyres changed and checked the wheelnut torques. Unfortunately, I removed the torque wrench but must have left the key attached to one of the wheels- of course it was nowhere to be found.
After investigating online companies who replace the keys at a cost of just under £40, I thought I would make a phone call to the dealer to see what I could expect.
He asked my registration number, and said that unless the nuts had been changed he had the correct pattern number. When I called in, the parts manager took the appropriate nut from their kit and checked it on my car- a perfect fit!
So I keep that key and they order in another one for their kit. Total cost inc VAT was £20.00!
