So it seems my X5 is a little ‘shaky’ on start up in the extreme cold we have had.
Any idea what could be causing it or is his pretty normal for a diesel in this weather?

Diesels are a little shaky on very cold mornings, but maybe worth doing an error code scan ( if you have a suitable diognostics scanner )as BMW diesels ha e an unreliable Glowplug relay setup.
It
Probably won't prevent the car starting but is heavily involved with the DPF regen cycle. Glowplug errors will prevent the DPF from regenerating.
I'm sure this cold snap will soon be over and smoother starting will prevail
