Hydraulic Floor Jack

Hi All,
So next month the winter 20" shoes will be coming off for my 21" summers.
As I have no jack in the boot, I want to invest in a new hydraulic jack and torque wrench for future use.
Any recommendations of any good spec products at a reasonable price rather than relying on Amazon or Ebay?

Priced Aldi have some 2 tonne ones in my local store didn't see the price

Do I need to buy anything else between the jack and car to be able to lift it. I've heard you need pads/packs at the lifting point to help secure the car?????????????

I bought a set of made up and machined pads specifically for BMW.  It was a long time back and I think it was from fleabay.  They have a rectangular shape that fits the BMW jacking point and a round pad that fits inside the jack shoe/cup.

They need a wider top shoe/cup than the one on the jack in the picture.  I have had our E46 slide off a jack and damage the sill (repair by BMW Bodyshop cost £700) so beware!  I have a larger ‘cup’ on another jack that I use for that car and the X6 now.

I recently bought a 2.5 ton Hawk trolley jack.
Although it seems a bit overkill for changing wheels and working on brakes I had lost faith in the 2 ton jack I already had.
The 2 ton jack seemed to twist while raising the car and I felt there was just too much weight on it to be reliable.
I had to get a low profile one so I could use it on the Z4 also.

Sorry guys not an expert on this.
So exactly what do I need 2.5 or 3 tonne jack and pads?
There is mention of ice hockey pucks?
Any pictures to help me know what to buy?
Or I'm I ok with just buying a jack?
All I need it for is to swap winters to summer wheels.
Are the mounts on the car easierly recognisable?
Lots of questions from someone who needs to make the task simple.

You dont necessarily need a 2.5 ton jack as you are only lifting one corner at a time.
I felt that 2 ton jacks were a bit flimsy and went for a stronger jack.
The hockey pucks you mention fit into the jacking points to protect them, not really needed if you dont have one, a bit of wood would protect them if you are careful.
The mounts are easily seen if you look under the car, large plastic bits with a rectangular centre.

As said above, you are only lifting one corner so a 2 or 2.5T trolley jack is fine.  If you can find one that has a cup the puck fits in, even better.  I have a 30 year old Kamasa which still works fine.

What I would say is never, ever, rely just on the jack.  Use axle stands as well!  I drive my car up on ramps at one end, then lift the other and place it on stands just in case a jack hydraulic seal goes.  I definitely can’t bench press 2.2T  :blink:
