19" Star rated non-RFT's on Black Circles

Post by Chrispy » Wed Feb 21, 2018 2:33 pm

Hi all,

When the current 19" Duellers are done I'll be going to non RFT's, and I'm currently having a look on Black Circles at what my options are.

Now the "specialist fitment" drop down box has BMW in it but select that and the only tires that pop up are RFT's, no mention of star marking anywhere.

Can I ask what others have opted for and what their experiences of them were, with regards to ride (the main reason for me ditching the stupid concrete RFT's), noise and wear rates?  On 19" I'd have hoped there would have been a few to choose from......

TIA, Chris.

P.S I'm not wanting to debate the decision to go non-RFT as that ship has sailed, this is just a query as to what tyre choices I'd have that are guaranteed to be star marked.

Hello,

Mine is a 7 seater 3.0d with staggerered wheels specified 255x50x19 107V on the front and 285x45x19 111V on the rear.  I've looked at Campskill's site - they have both Michelin and Bridgestone  non-runflat * marked that size but, and it's a big but, the weight ratings are only 103 for the front and 107 for the rear.  On that basis I fear an insurance claim would be invalidated because the non-runflats are not the same as the manufacturer's specification.  Consequently, unless I can source non-runflats * marked with the correct weight ratings I'll stick with runflats.

Im on my second set of Bridgestone non runflats 9 & 10 x 19 and have had no adverse effects. Very different car to drive with  less road noise. Both my rear wheels had hairline cracks when i took off the runflats .
This is what I'm most curious about - I mean I've gone from RFT's to non on squishy SE suspension (3 series with 17"s) and it was an improvement but mostly in noise and tramlining vs ride but this car is something else. Its like the tyres are literally solid rubber, no air in them. Zero bulge when parked on uneven ground, no give whatsoever and with a heavily pregnant wife in the passenger seat far too fidgety and jiggly a ride over every little imperfection in the road. Awful.

It's weird, it's the first time I've been looking forward to tyres wearing out so I can replace them....

So these are still Bridgestones, are these still star marked etc? Just trying to see what model to go for when the Dueller H/P's are done.

You have to realise that the sidewall of those runflats have to support an almost 2.5 ton monster if punctured so they have to be like iron. Friend of mine fitted a set of Kumhos on his Msport last week and they are even quieter than my Bridgestones.

I went to Pirelli ROSSO  P zero's on the X3. They are in affect the non rft version of the original tyres.

Makes sense then I guess, explains why they're so much harder than those I had on a much smaller car, and as such I'm expecting the difference to be much more noticeable.

So it's looking like Pirelli P Zero Rosso's are an option, with Bridgestones also being a possibility. Can I ask, and about the Kumhos too, are all these star marked?

ive used the Bridgestone Turanza ER30 from Tyreleader and they are star marked. Think the only other option for star marks are the Michelins.
Brilliant - will look into those. How are you finding them wear wise?

Set of 4 for £645, plus fitting (free delivery) at wherever I take them from Tyre Leader. Not bad really.

Thanks for the info.

Hi Chrispy,

Please can I caution you to be careful over the weight ratings on the tyres you are looking at.  Seven seaters and those with increased towing capacity may have a higher rating than 5 seaters.  Check the details of the original tyres  using the VIN number/OEM to list all the equipment fitted when new.  As I said earlier, the weight ratings for mine on 19" wheels are 107 on the front and 111 on the rears and I cannot find non-runflat * rated tyres with this figure - they are all lower.  Even though some non-flats are * rated, you really should get tyres with the specified weight rating as well. Some insurance companies are very careful to check in the event of a claim and quite readily will decline to payout if something is amiss!

Hi again,

...and I forgot to mention the speed rating.  Tyres for mine are rated at V- some * marked non-runflats with the higher weight ratings have lower speed ratings such as H.  Can I suggest checking that all the data for tyre size, weight and speed ratings for new ones match the original spec!
Hi Graeme,

I've just done a bit of a Google re this and seen a few comments about how insurers behave - basically they do seem to check in the event of a payout. It's never something I've considered before (it's only ever been size and speed rating) but then this is my first 7 seater, 2.1 tonne car....

Tempted to give my insurer a call and ask what their policy is and if some kind of note needs to be made on my policy re this as what others on t'interweb have stated.

Also makes me wonder if it's the fact that they are RFT that gives them the load rating they have?...

Chris.
:) the ones I've found are 103 and 107 (W and V rated respectively) so definitely a lower rating for load but not speed.
