Mysterious Engine & Gearbox Oil Leaks??? Worrying

Post by martinc » Tue Feb 20, 2018 9:22 pm

Hi All ,

After purchasing my X5 30d E70 , upon closer inspection ive discovered 2 oil leaks? One is midway down the engine around the head gasket area ? No evidence of headgasket going. And the other is on the Auto box where its meets with the engine? potential internal gearbox seals?

The oil seems to have been there a while but couldve been a build up over time, i just want it right.

The car is having compression tests tomorrow so i will hopefully know if its losing pressure somewhere.

Does anyone know if this is a common issue ?

Regards

How long have you had the car ? Did you buy it from a car dealer? You may be able to reject the car, or get the repairs done at their expense.
If bought privately probably not an option.

Hi all ,

I'm looking at replacing my gearbox oil but however my local Europarts has mentioned that it's not just the oil !

You to replace the bottom pan aswell , it apparently comes in a set kit ? Anyone eles  heard of this before ?

Also I've noticed a slight leak from where the box meets the engine ? Is this the internal seals going ?

Cheers

Have a look on Realoem (use the last 7 of your VIN) to pull up your car and see what the service kit comprises.  It may be that th filter is part of the pan.

This is the one for my X6 with the 8sp box....and yes it is a complete kit inc pan.

Ahh good idea ! I didn't think of that.

Is the gearbox filter part of the servicings?

Do you recommend changing the inner seals while the box is off?

My twopence worth ! Dont go into panic  mode just yet. First thing is to remove the undertray. Give all the oily parts a good spray with a degreaser. Let it sit for awhile and then get your pressure washer out . Only when everything is clean will you see where the oil is coming out . Its quite possible its old oil . I came upon one recently where oil was everywhere and it turned out some idiot at some stage had overtightened the oil filter cracking the housing.
