Hi all,
Have a broken x5 (2003 3:0d auto) on the way home I started to get a quite bad wobble on the steering wheel. Thinking it was a puncture I pulled over and checked all the tyres. All good. Checked all the wheel nuts, all tight. So drove on slowly to pull over to a safer place. Upon turning left off the main road, heard a nice grinding sound and lost all drive. Had the car recovered home.
Jacked the car up today to see if anything obvious. Drivers side.. if turning the wheel the driveshaft also turns, however passenger side wheel turns but the driveshaft does not. Is that normal or am I right in thinking the cv joint has destroyed itself? any help appreciated.
Jay.

Drive issue help needed
Re: Drive issue help needed
How long have you owned the X, is this an original driveshaft or a replacement, the reason I ask is that people are now buying cheap replacement shafts when something goes on the original, which are not cheap but in general do well in excess of 100k. If the boot hasn't torn and subsequent loss of grease then they can last twice that mileage. Your symptoms sound like the weld which holds the yoke in place has broken/give way and the wheel and hub are spinning on the shaft, a typical fault of after market shafts being put on a 2 ton vehicle. Of course this is just speculation on my part.

Thanks for the reply.
I've owned the x5 for 3 months now, looking through the history I can't see any for cv joints but I suspect you're right. The car has just ticked over to 144k.
I'm just working out if I can afford to have it done or do it myself

A tad more expensive now but still looks good value at £225 for both. Warranty is only valid if fitted by a qualified mechanic who can prove that on garage letter head paper should you need to claim. It also says they are manufactured by ISO/TS 16949, this is a standard not a company. I know, I'm being picky, just the level of boredom I'm suffering at the moment. If I needed them I would buy.
