E70 40d m sport
Hi
I have finally decided the 40d is the car I'm going to buy. The car will be a 12 plate asvthats where my budget sits.
Does anyone know of a link or on this forum that shows a list of standard spec the car should have? I know a lot of people have extras fitted when ordered new but I just wanted to know everything that is standard interior and exterior if possible.
Hope you guys can help .
Many thanks

Considering an upgrade to a 40d myself. Is timing chain failure a common enough issue on them, or would it not be frequent enough to put you off buying one? My specialist has 1 in for a new engine at the minute which concerned me somewhat!

Re: E70 40d m sport
I’m not sure we have ever had a timing chain issue on the 6-cyl N57S engine reported on here. The 4-cyl N47 2.0L was notorious for it (and has been replaced by the new B47 unit) and the old V8 petrol had an issue with guides failing.
If the chain does go then it’s major surgery time because it is at the back of the engine, not the front!

Yup, it was parked round the back of his place waiting for an engine- not an easy thing to find either!
I was pricing warranties today and a BMW one is £1405 which seems mental when the warranty on my E93 335 was £500 odd.

Ouch.....I wonder what caused it!
I pay just on £1,000 a year for my X6 warranty. The policy price hasn’t changed in 4 years but Insurance Premium Tax has added a fair bit (12%). I pay monthly which seems to freeze the actual premium price.

Re: E70 40d m sport
I just bought an X5 40d privately a couple of weeks ago, came from an e46 M3.
I was very tempted by adding the BMW warranty but the lowest I could get it down to was still £1500, even with a £250 excess.
I ended up going with warranty direct who seem to be one of the better 3rd party ones. Got a nice discount by speaking to them directly so cost just over £500 and it covers a lot of things including:
- A much higher labour rate payout so you can take car to bmw instead of normal garage.
- Cover for consequential loss, this was a big one for me because a lot of warranties only cover the failed part, not damage to any other parts as a result.
- Covers parts that have failed through wear and tear.
The bmw warranty was just too steep - if you make a claim then together with £250 excess thats almost £1800 you're guaranteed to have spent. 2 claims and that's over £2,000 so just couldn't justify that.

Re: E70 40d m sport
I like the sound of that. So the Warranty Direct one is recommended as a rule?
Re: E70 40d m sport
I had one on the previous X5 and they were a royal pain.
Fault: Glow Plug control unit (error message).
- Did not pay diagnostics and BMW insist on doing that first.
- Did not pay for the removal of the parts to get to the Glow Plug control unit.
- Mileage was over 60k so own contribution was higher
Can't remember exact figures, but from an £850 bill I got something like £200 back after they had deducted everything.
Second claim, gearbox sump leaking.
- Diagnostics (oil on the floor ) ) not covered. Oil gasket leaking was the result.
- Did not pay the replacement oil (funny when you remove the gasket you lose all the oil, but only the gasket replacement was paid for).
- Mileage over 60k so high own contribution.
So two claims, both only very small contribution for payment by WD so I decided it was not worth it. Perhaps only as a warranty for a major gearbox failure or so.

Re: E70 40d m sport
I think it really depends on the cover you have. When I spoke to them, there were a lot of add ons but even with that it cost £499 so I thought it good value.
For example by default, they cover something like 60% of the value of the part but you can have an add on which then covers the full amount.
Maybe you had a policy like that where they don’t cover the full amount?
Also years ago I sold a car and transferred the warranty to the new guy, think it was warranty direct again. He had an issue that ended up costing almost £2k and they covered almost all of it.
For peace of mind, I think it’s worth the £500.

In regards to high mileage, mine is 80k but with the add on they will cover full amount regardless.

Re: E70 40d m sport
I had Warranty Direct Luxury Car cover - their top one at the time - and had a similar experience with them not paying for diagnostics and only covering the £10 part needed.
As the policy goes on in time, more items come off the covered list so read the small print very carefully. Even with top flight cover, and less than 40k on the clock and 4 years old, a lot of items such as the ICE were excluded.
To give them credit, they did pay out over £3.5k when my gearbox failed with my contribution just £75. I had full Dealer labour cover too.
