Runflat Tyres

Hi there

I need to replace the tyres on my 2010 E70 35D and I have decided to stick with the BMW * Runflat tyres.  I have the 20" wheels so need the 275/40 R20 on the fronts and 315/35 R20 on the rears.

Looking at the choices, it is limited.  Either the Bridgestone Dueller H/P Sport or the Dunlop SP SportMaxx GT.

I currently have the Bridgestone Duellers but rather fancy swapping to the Dunlops as they have an efficiency rating of C as opposed to an E for the Duellers and are quieter.  Pricewise, there is very little to distinguish (but still a large outlay of course!).  I am particularly interested in wear and expected mileage.

Does anyone have any experience with the SP Sportmaxx GT tyres they can pass on please?

Had them on my X6 and got about 14,000 miles before the set needed changing out.  I actually thought they were louder than the Bridgestones but the recipe may have changed.

You can also have Pirelli, I’ve got a set of them on now, too early to report on wear though

Abbott26 I looked on the Pirelli website and it appears they only do 18 and 19 inch tyres for the X5. The 20 inch was not given as an option.

When I bought my car from the main dealer they fitted Bridgestone dueller hp sport to the rear axle. Now almost 3yrs the tyres are at 5mm and travelled 18,000 miles. The fronts I replaced with continentals after 10,000miles tyres are 3.6mm. Both tyres are run flats and OE approved however I don’t know if you should get significantly more life from rears or it is the fact that the bridgestones are a much harder compound? It’s the first x drive car I have owned but from previous experience of bmw rear drive cars I tended to wear front and rear tyres evenly.

Perhaps someone could advise?

Hello,

I've done 140,000 now over 9 years in my X5 on Continentals, Bridgestones and Good Years.  19" runflats, 255 x50 on the front, 285 x45 on the rear.  For every make the rears wear more quickly than the fronts.  I always stick to the recommended tyre pressures. For a time when I first got the car I did have to drive a route with several roundabouts on derestricted roads and turning right caused wear on the outside of the left front tyre. Now, for the past few years most of my mileage is on open roads and it is the centre part of the rears that wear first. About 4 years ago, after noticing the inner edges of the rears (Continentals down to the canvas after 16,000), wearing quickly which is a common problem, I had the tracking front and rear reset and that fixed the issue with a new set of Continentals.  On a set of Goodyears at present, the rears are down to 2.5mm after only 17000 whilst the fronts have 5mm.  I got only 24000 miles on Continentals!  However, Goodyears are £30 cheaper per tyre  Best were Bridgestones at 30,000 but they were dearer still. So pence per mile is not very different.

I went for the Dunlop Sportmaxx GT's in the end. Replaced all four. First impressions are very good- they definitely seem quieter than the old Bridgestone Duellers. Time will tell how they wear. I will religiously check the pressures weekly and have 4WD tracking on a Hunter machine every six months.

I found that Blackcircles were abut the cheapest. Tyreleader were slightly cheaper but they could not confirm that the Dunlop’s were BMW starred tyres- even though the ones I bought from Blackcircles ARE and said so on their website. I wasn’t prepared to take a chance. My local garages and mobile fitters could not beat Blackcircles- I guess these massive tyres are limited market so the smaller garages can not compete with the larger retailers. They are probably slightly loss leaders. You can definitely tell the difference with a premium brand- the amount of balance weights was remarkably small for such a big tyre- my fitter commented on it!
