Cornering lights upgrade?

Post by RichM50d » Sat Feb 03, 2018 4:48 pm

So, there was me thinking there are no more old fashioned bulbs left on the car after doing the LED indicator upgrade, and low and behold, the cornering lights (the ones inside the inner side of the main headlight unit, not the foglights) are traditional halogen bulbs! Has anyone upgraded these to LED?

I like the Bimmian lights, but can’t see anything on their website. Any ideas?

It’s mainly left that way because dimming LEDs needs special circuitry otherwise they just go on and off.  Another reason used to be that Halogen (or even yellow) filament foglights have a better colour temperature for driving in fog (redder light cuts through better) though with more cars becoming equipped with full LED systems that is changing.

You’ll need to know whether the fog supply uses a ‘variable voltage’ dimmer or a ‘pulse width modulator’ dimmer.  If I remember correctly, you need the latter for dimming LEDs - most of which run via pulsed electronics anyway.

If you film LED Lighting with a video camera using the right shutter interval you can them then going on and off.
:ant: Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.

Isn't that what happened when I upgraded to the full LED lighting package?

Yes. But I’ve got the Xenon headlights.

That's a shame as I think the fully adaptive LEDs are s must-have.

Who specifies an M50d without LEDs anyway? (I appreciate that yours is an ex-demo - so perhaps that answers my question!)

I find it odd that they put just about every extra on this car, but not the adaptive LED’s. Any ex demo cars I saw with the adaptive LED’s didn’t have half the options this one has, so I chose to get one with everything I want and need 90% of the time. If I could swap my retractable tow bar for LED headlights, I’d do it in an instant!

Would be interesting to see if some adaptive LED headlights come up on eBay one day. I assume they are exactly the same size/ shape as the standard headlight housing?

Must say in hindsight, I wish I had opted for the LED adaptive headlights. My wife's MB has them and they are so much better than the xenons. At the time of order it was a toss up between the LEDs or individual leather dash and I went for the latter with no regrets. I was getting to a point with all the options I had specified that the cost was ballooning to a point where I had to stop.
If I could go for after market then I may consider but al want the M performance brakes and slotted discs!

Ok, so looking in the manual, the bulbs are H7 55w.

Will these ones work https://bimmian.com/Accessories-for-BMW ... ght-Bulbs/

As they are active lights, I’m wondering if the LED upgrade would have the same throw/ active effect that the halogen bulbs have?

After speaking with Bimmian, they’ve confirmed that their bulbs will work, so I’ve ordered a pair & will bring them home when I come back from the US in a couple of weeks.
