I have a BMW Apple 30 Pin cable along with a genuine Apple 30 pin to lightning adapter cable. This allows full control and charging of an iPhone with a lightning port. It also has the advantage of giving a bit extra length over the BMW lightning cable. This is for E70 and I assume F15 too. It came out of my E93.

£30 for both, no offers.

What is the benefit of this over and above simple enhanced Bluetooth please?

It's sold now, but it charges the phone too.
