replace single tyre?

Post by bascule » Mon Jan 22, 2018 9:00 am

My '53 x5 has Michelins all round, but one of them (nearside left) is approaching legal limit. The Offside left is a matching Michelin but is a good tyre which has 4-5mm left.  I don't have any issues on the car, but will need to address the tyre that's due for replacement - do you think it will be ok just to replace that one?

to my thinking that will result in less RR difference than there is currently..

[/quote]My advice would be to bite the bullet and change all 4 tyres, unless you like rolling the dice on transfer boxes?
Too many stories of people trying to save money, but ultimately paying a lot more because they tried to save money on tyres.
The other option would be to try used places and find a tyre that has 4-5mm left on it to match the others.
Another thought, why has that tyre worn so badly compared to the others? I would suggest a 4 wheel alignment and geometry check at the same time.

It's a wierd one.  It's not worn unevenly, its a good wear pattern.

Replacing all four is not currently an option! ;)

Part worn sounds like a good idea tbh, bring it into line with the others.

I have no issues whatsover with the current disparity. All four tyres are star rated, fwiw.

That must be approaching 50% extra wear, something must be wrong or a bad tyre, pity you hadn't noticed earlier and swapped  the wheels around. Would agree with Pinewood and get a used tyre

Is it a front or a rear Michelin that you need?

I've got a Michelin Diamaris star rated front if that helps you.
I'll put the details in a PM to you

All sorted - found a pair of brand spanking new star rated Michelin Diamaris for a bit over 200 delivered for the pair. £20 later at my local tyre place, and both fronts are done and I have a part worn left over.

My rears are still ok, but I might keep an eye out for a similar deal rather than leave it til its necessary.

How many miles do you all get from a set?

I used to get into the mid-20k per set on my E53.....19”.  Used two sets and they wore evenly all round.

I get all manner of weird things using Diamaris on my 20" style 87s. I've had a full wheel alignment, checked the rear bags, front springs, bushes etc and I think it must just be the awful roads where I am. I get slightly odd wear at times and of course you can't rotate these damned things.

I tend to try and find a part worn if I'm in the 4-5mm situation or at least I used to as I've bought enough new ones now over the years of having X5s that I have a front and rear axle set of spares roughly all the same! I'd say you can get good mileage out of fronts but rears don't tend to do more than 10-12k using the 315s
