Hi everyone I have not been on here for some time but I think the time has come to look at updating the e53 now I have been driving it for nearly 7 years
I have been looking for a 40d around 2013 but have found a few 50d Msport models for about the right money and must admit I am tempted by the performance
I know the 40d will map up to about the same as a standard 50d but just want to get a bit of feedback on any advantages of each model to help me decide
TIA
Stewart

Re: E70 40d or 50d
The tri turbo unit is a very complex beast that you really don’t want to own without a BMW warranty in my opinion.
The three turbos are nearly £6k fitted........ Yes the 40d can get close in performance when mapped but if you have a warranty you won’t be covered on any failures ecu or drivetrain related.
This leaves the choice to me pretty simple get the M50d with a warranty and be happy and expect around £3000 a year running costs with the warranty excluding fuel.
The 40d is no slouch I can assure (I have recently bought one) you for a 2 ton Derv burner the running costs are cheaper than the M50d especially when you’re talking consumables. The fuel consumption is vastly different on the M50d real world driving too. I have two car club buddies that have the e type and f type variants of the M50d both are regulars at the pumps.
If running costs are not a concern get the M50d but you’re going to be hurting if you don’t have a warranty especially when you’re talking turbo’s, sensors and control units as most are M50d specific.
I’m pretty experienced with the Bavaria stable and high performance motors so I do have a small idea of what I’m talking about.
Just make sure you get a Autowatch Ghost fitted and a couple of cheap hidden trackers on either.
Good luck
Sam.
