So, and forgive me if I'm simply not reading it correctly, are the parts and labour covered?  So if it failed again within 24 months BMW would replace the part for free (including fitting) or just the cost of the part? 

Admittedly the part did make up most of the cost but there was still a good £400 plus on labour after the dreaded VAT.

I just got it back this morning.

It went in on Monday and got it back today!

They had some issues when installing the unit apparently.

Most importantly NO CHARGE.  I also asked about the warranty on the new part.
He said the warranty on the new part will be continued from when I first bought the faulty part.

So I got 4 months left, just doesn't seem right.

Not gonna use the bloody thing.

Wow - almost a full working week to fit it?  Just as well labour was included warranty wise!

Disgusting that the warranty doesn't reset when the new part goes on, but is dated from the fitting of the original. 

Yep, I'm going to stop using mine too if this is going to be the case as even the new parts seem to have no design improvements, they're just imploding.

I think the internal gearing system strips and that’s that.  It is possible to rebuild them if you can get parts, but BMW don’t bother.

[/quote]By the horrendous squealing grinding sound mine made when it died that would figure. Considering the fact these things are used widely on VAG's and other manufacturers these days (my wife's Q3 has one, which funnily enough has also freaked out once, but electronically, and an ignition restart got it to let go) you'd have hoped they'd be more robust.

If my Škoda Superb is anything to go by, it now has a motorised actuator on each rear calliper rather than a central actuator pulling cables driving a drum brake.  Perhaps manufacturers have learned that is a more reliable way of providing an ebrake?

[/quote]Yeah the sound the Q3 makes when engaging the parking brake is clearly different, like it's winding on the rear calipers, and when I DIY replaced both my Fabia vRS calipers years ago, they both had the parking brake as a cable pulling on the calipers themselves powered by the handle in the car, usual fare. Motorise that action and you have a parking brake. My theory is they did just that rather than reinvent the wheel, and it's seemingly more reliable. BMW's with rear discs have the little drum brake thing going on for the parking brake and they went for a single central actuator and dual bowden cables from it to the drums. Perhaps it has to do more work, pulling on those cables vs a "per caliper" servo on the VAG's? I've been told the bowden cables seize (mine were welded in place apparently) and the actuator must then struggle to move them as a result. Possibly corrosion related?

As I say, my wife's (manual) Q3 did lock on and refuse to let go the other week, prior to mine imploding. It simply ignored the pressing of the button. Turn off the ignition, wait 5 mins, try again, all sorted. So even those aren't trouble free but the fix there didn't cost £1300.....
