Diesel or petrol X1?
I'm weighing up the pro's and con's of buying a used X1. Diesel engines are pretty much being demolished at the moment but on the plus side there's a lot more choice on the 2nd hand market than petrol versions and the petrol versions seem to be at premium prices as a result. I'm pretty much sold on a diesel version but I have a slight worry about the PDF filter not burning off it's contents if I don't do any long runs. The longest regular run I do each week is twenty minutes in each direction, top speed 60mph. Other wise it's rural runs and trips to the shops. I do a longer trip once a month. Anyone think that sort of ownership is going to give me problems with the PDF? Thanks in advance for any helpful answers.

I drive a diesel, my last car was a diesel, I won’t be getting another one though, it’s the wrong direction and the government will eventually turn on diesel owners

It's a bit rich really that it was the government who encouraged us to buy diesels years ago and now it seems it was a bad idea and the motoring public are the ones made to suffer the consequences.

BMW are just in the process of updating the B47 engines to the B47TU1 (twin turbo) which will improve economy, efficiency and reduce emissions at present - which is why the configurator currently has no diesels on it much to my annoyance - so that they meet the new EU6c standards required from the start of 2019. The cars will also now need AdBlue to meet the regs.
EU6c is much tougher and covers real world tests rather than just lab tests. Much tougher cold and hot start cycles are included - cold starts being an issue for diesels and overly ignored in earlier regulations. I have no problem buying another diesel and the X1 is currently top of my list (the road tests for the 2.0d X3 real world mpg falls below what my X6 does at just 33].
The new regs make it very clear that the EU know it could have been better at checking, and that the car industry did not do as promised. Surveillance will be increased and even tougher regs are due a year later.
Petrol engines are fine in smaller cars but as soon as you get into anything larger and need to commute 15k a year as I do then they the cost is too high.
Diesel will have to stay in as the CO2 rules cannot be met without them - and electric as yet still isn’t good enough on range, with inadequate charging infrastructure likely to be in place for at least another decade or more. We don’t have enough generating capacity or distribution capacity to meet the demand either on National Grid or to houses.

Hi we had a 2011 X1 20d xdrive manual from new , did 50,000 miles in the car which was faultless , px the car March 17 th last year for 10k which was a fairly good deal for us against 220d xdrive gran tourer m sport .
Although the X1 was a good car rear leg room was never great for the ever growing kids , running costs were good 40 mpg , would I have another ? No . Why the car really should have had an auto box as it never seemed happy in most gears , the gran tourer is in a different class spacious , 7 seats , fully kitted out with satnav , folding mirrors , self park , auto box 3 settings , etc , most of these things are standard if you get an M sport , although they are well spec d anyway .
The X1 was traded to a dealer after us and unfortunately is still their , so one owner car , full service history through BMW as it had a service pack , towbar and sports seats . The point I am trying to make is if you are set on an X1 make sure you try a few manual and auto , go for a 2.0 + as the 1.8 are under powered , get the best spec you can get and don't pay over the odds . One thing to look out for is the EGR valve as this is a common problem on quite a few models , our gran tourer has already had one after 9,000 miles .

We would go auto and 2.0d...nothing less. The Active Tourer is No2 at present, with the X2 in third. I do like the X3 but the economy is well below what is practical.

Hi just got rid up of my F48 X1 it was 20d had it two years 30k on it enjoyed it but when you live with it becomes uncomfortable on long journeys and build quality is a little suspect and second had values are pants

I had a 2.0 D X line 65 reg for 2 years almost. Very economical car to run and drove very nice in town and on long runs, only got rid as I got chance to get back in a well spec X5. If I had to pick a fault, it would be the old fashioned gear lever which they use on this X1, just lazy really BUT when you've had the electronic one you will understand but saying that the 8 speed box worked well after cluncking it into drive lol ps stratstones sold it within a week off putting in on sale £24600 with 12k on clock
