I,ve just had my 2005 facelift X5 into the local garage to change my diff oils and transfer box oil.
Quite an easy job for them I'd presume as they've worked plenty on my car before and know that I like to keep it running pristine (costly)
The job never went as smoothly as expected, BMW (carlisle) sent a bottle of the wrong diff oil,..one was ok, but must have been a wrong bottle on the shelf next to it.
That was just a minor hiccup and we got the correct one the next day.
My concerns were with the oil for the transfer box. Its definately an X-drive, so I presume (after reading many articles ) that the oil for the X-drive is much more expensive than the older non-X-drive transfer boxes.
I did mention this to the garage who done the work that they would need to order the X-drive oil and even gave them the part number (83220 397244) which I believe is a TF 0870 oil.
Now that I have received the invoice through the post I see they charged me only £33 for the litre where-as I thought it was more pricey around £45-£55 mark ???
Have they been sent the wrong oil from BMW to put into my X5 ???
Just wondering if anyone knows the price of genuine BMW oil ?
(the garage said there was no numbers on the BMW oil bottle that corresponded with the ones I gave )

If the part number on the bottles was: 83222409710 then that is fine. The number you list has been superseded by this one (as has 83220306816), both of which were showing against the E53. It’s the current variant and is used on most of the current BMW range with transfer boxes as well as yours. Retail and Wholesale (Trade to Trade) prices can be very different.
