Hi all,
I know there are a couple of us who leave our Xs on charge with solar chargers and trickles etc but I was wondering if anyone has bothered to rig up a cutoff switch like BMW fit to all their cars during shipping? I was looking on Xoutpost and it looks like a couple of the lads over there have come up with really good installations that look pretty factory.
I'm away a lot with work and so neither the X5 nor the M3 get that much use but of course the X5 is that much harder to prep as the battery lives under the cargo floor and then under the air suspension pump! Hopefully it's okay to link an image?

Anyone here done anything similar? I just use a negative terminal cutoff on the M3 as the battery is so much easier to access than on the X5.
Cheers all and happy new year

Battery Cutoff Switch?
Re: Battery Cutoff Switch?
I'm in the solar corner but only because that suits my circumstances. The only issue I would have with the cut off switch is the hassle of resetting all the different settings on various components and I think I'd find somewhere different for the switch, there must be a couple of heavy duty wires at the back of that door which must make it awkward to access that compartment. Just forward of the door would seem a better location.

No alarm, and access via the tailgate needs power to operate the microswitches / tailgate lock.

Re: Battery Cutoff Switch?
Only thought about this the other day actually.if an electrical problem was to rear its ugly head,i would like to isolate the battery quickly to prevent possible total loss of the car.
Re: Battery Cutoff Switch?
I had considered that at one point too, but realistically what are the chances of you ever being in that position. I can recall the buying and selling mileages of every car Ive ever owned and worked out the other day I've driven a minimum of 975,000 miles in my life. Never needed a battery cut off switch. Sure there will be others who did, but sometimes you really have to think about whether something really needs done or not.

I wish Smee that I had enough common sense that I could follow the above rule. )

Re: Battery Cutoff Switch?
All fair points gents it's just I get very little usage out of my cars due to being away a lot with work. All parked securely away from the public etc. I was thinking of locating this on the opposite panel shown so that I could simply lower the rear seat and access the switch. Lock rear doors from inside and passenger front before using the key to lock the drivers door and it seems very little hassle then?
