2003 X5 4.6 petrol
2003 X5 4.6 petrol
Seen one of these for sale local to me, decent price, but have a feeling that the 4.6 is a bit of a gas guzzler when compared to my 3.0 Diesel??

Hi
You are correct about 12-15 mpg approx on on as also only has 5 speed box,
I had a facelift 4.4 with 6 speed box and that was about 15-19mpg
So if only doing a few miles like me about 2k a year as it's a second car then it's ok if a daily driver then uyoull need deep pockets.
But with all that said they do put a big smile on your face

Low 20s at a steady 70, high teens around town, low teens if you want to enjoy yourself.
Re: 2003 X5 4.6 petrol
Post a link to the car in question, never know, someone on here might know the history etc of the said vehicle.
Always handy to know the history of a car.

Re: 2003 X5 4.6 petrol
I have a 2003 4.6 IS, I get around town around 16mpg, Long run around 28mpg
Re: 2003 X5 4.6 petrol
Also got a lot more bottom end shunt than my 'M'
Re: 2003 X5 4.6 petrol
My prefacelift 4.4i returned a computer displayed average of 20.3 mpg, bang on same as the official figures & when driven lightly.
I would see 26-28.5 on runs, maybe approaching 30mpg if I sat at 60 mph on the motorway on a cool day and foot off the gas when going downhill. Cold start local short trips could be single figure mpg. Town work with some traffic flow on warm engine 14-15mpg.
Official combined on 4.6is is 19mpg IIRC.
Some may wonder why I would be motivated to drive gently....Well, I owned it for 10 years as a daily driver doing up to 10k a year. Pockets were deep enough to fuel it & keep it maintained but not bottomless.

Re: 2003 X5 4.6 petrol
I use my 4.6 as my daily driver, 20 mile round trip to work and then any other excuse I can find, have two other cars which hardly ever get used, the X5 is just so much nicer to drive. Don't see myself selling any time soon, spent a fair bit of money on it but mostly on upgrades, brakes, satnav, refurbed wheels etc, in general it's been reliable although I do a fair bit of preventive maintenance, still less money spent than getting a new car. As for MPG, can't remember the last time I saw plus of 18 mpg, on the other hand never see less than 17 mpg. With what I have spent and the condition of the car I'll never get a decent price for it. I'd probably get more, I would get more breaking it. That, though is a long way down the road.

Always seems to be 17mpg around locally, and 21-23 on a run, you could always LPG it!

It's been LPG'd. Makes it less painful on the pocket.

Re: 2003 X5 4.6 petrol
For a V8 in this area around £1500 obviously reducing with less cylinders. The advertised price here is 62.9p but BP give a card and stamp it every time you put in 30ltrs or more which reduces the next fill up by 1p a ltr up to 10p. So realistically I average 57p a ltr.

Re: 2003 X5 4.6 petrol
So that is in effect half price v diesel or petrol, so in essence your 17mpg is 34mpg in a petrol/diesel equivalent i.e. half the mileage for half the price as it were? That might make it work doing

Re: 2003 X5 4.6 petrol
Depends on your annual mileage I suppose. If in the 10k a year region you save the money in roughly a year, suppose as well you need to be someone who tends to keep their vehicle for a number of years. If mine wasn't on gas it certainly wouldn't be my daily driver. horses for courses??
