Same happened a few years ago but I had not followed it since. Was a new site started?

I saw a post somewhere that suggested that the server had gone down.

Yes, bmwland folded and BMWlander was started. It has been going for a few years now but it did have a problem a year or so ago when the site was down for a couple of days. BMWlander has been down for almost a week now :o :o

Unfortunately many website operators have no disaster recovery plan or backup system for when it all goes wrong (such as seems to be the case with BMWLänder’s hosting service).  That costs money and is the risk taken with non-subscription Forums.  It’s challenging enough for commercial organisations with decent IT budgets!

Not the best Xmas pressie for the owner  :cry1:

The reason a few years ago when the original subscription site folded, was because the owner unfortunately died - and no passwords etc were accessible, plus apparently family were not knowledgeable / helpful in getting it going again.    That was the reason a new site was started.  What a shame the hosting company has collapsed - that will be the end of the forum unless there are backups offsite somewhere, which is probably unlikely  :xmassad:

@BMWLander?  I’m not a tweeter so may have that wrong.

I don’t think so, AFAIK, Ian is working on it, though may prove difficult, such a shame after all his efforts, moreso when the site brought together a long standing community

Message from the home page - -

I'm so sorry that the site has disappeared, it has completely gone without any warning and has caught me completely by surprise. Unfortunately I cannot get hold of the hosts as their phone line goes straight to a 'We're very busy please call back later' message and the raised tickets are going unanswered. More frustratingly, I can't get a back up of the site because the Control Panel has disappeared and all other methods have failed. I am laying the blame for this firmly at the feet of the hosts who have been completely unhelpful and unprofessional.

So what now? I haven't given up and there are a number of things to try and get hold of a back up but if I'm honest I'm not massively hopeful but you never know. If I can't it all comes down to whether we want to do it again and given that I still have a small pot of money from your contributions it's entirely doable but I would completely understand if people were not fussed anymore.

If you want to contact me please email bmwlander@outlook.com

I'll try and keep you updated as best I can but again, I'm so sorry about this.

Ian

Update -
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear All, a quick update to say that despite my best efforts I can't get hold of a back up and it looks like the site has gone - again. I can't quite believe it but I've been massively let down by a company called North Hosts who simply stopped provided a service last week with absolutely no warning. After some thought, I'm going to start again but this time with a bulletproof, watertight, nuclear winter proof site with built-in contingency to ensure that no-one can let me down like this again. I can't give an accurate timeframe of when this will happen but I'll start working on it asap. As ever, thanks for your patience and apologies again for the disastrous events over the past week.
