Checked my X6 40D today and it also has a plate.
Any chance for a picture mate?
There will be a part number on a plate. Could you tell me what it is please?

Many thanks
I will get a pic later and see if I can see a part number
It would be greatly appreciated mate
As I'm here confused as hell
I have taken some pics but wont be able to post them here till later tonight when I get home.
There is a part number on it but no BMW mark.
Numbers on it are SP06550 and PP T20.
If you have whats app on your phone PM me your number and I will send you them.

I have just noticed that you are based in Scotland
Apparently Scotland is classified as cold climate and therefore bmws sold in there can be equipped with Cold Climate Version meaning your engine will have special air heating element and should have this plastic cover as standard.
If you would put last 7 digits of your vin on this website
https://www.bmwvin.com

It will tell you all the options fitted in your car
And on the bottom there should be an option S842A - cold climate version

If that's the case than we will know that our cars without it wont have it and yours being cold climate is equipped with it as standard.

Many thanks for all the help

Called bypass valve
But looks and obviously according to others is a plastic plate

There is no other item on the diagram that will fit there
And BMW call it bypass valve only because it should normally be open to draw warm air, and by putting a plastic cover with cold climate they bypassing it, and warm air is pushed to engine using heating elemnt connected to engine breather system.

Oh and forgot to mention.
I went to my dealership today and asked service technician to have a look.
He checked it and said that is how it should be in UK

Mine is a UK car and has it fitted though.....  ???  In which case it should be standard on a UK car, or at least that would be my view.  It almost looks like a bypass door as used on jet engines at high power settings to pull in extra air - warm air in the case of these cars perhaps? - and closed when not required.

Unless there were a load that went out with them because that is all the factory had?  Mine is quite an early 40d (Oct 2010 build).

Mine is November 2010 and doesn't have it.
If you look at the diagram there is a hole in a filter housing.
And that part is additional part under Cold Climate only

Can't see it being standard in UK.

Also it would have to be spring loaded somehow to open and close when more air is needed indeed.
But it's a plastic cover.

Nictrix has sent me a picture of his

Just a plastic,

Could you check if yours is same?
Any bmw part number?

Those numbers on this pic are not showing on Google at all

Looking at realoem

Same part

Bmw x3 30d uk version
Part is greyed out, not avaliable at all, meaning there would be a hole left in it.
No cold climate version available on this diagram.

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=WY52-EUR-07_2009_F25_BMW_X3_30dX&diagId=13_1405#13717812062

BMW x3 30d USA version
Same part listed as standard equipment, no cold climate and no option not to have it.

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=WY33-USA-06_2013_F25_BMW_X3_28dX&diagId=13_1405#13717812062

This is some sort of a joke this realoem and BMW in this case.

Just to add that my car is June 2010 so is also an early car.
From BMWs point of view your car is correct and ours are wrong as they dont have the cold climate option.
It could well be what X5Sport says and our cars were an oversight and had it fitted by accident as thats what they had available.
