X5 40d Air Filter Housing Missing Part?? Bypass Valve

Post by neo61uk » Sat Nov 25, 2017 3:56 pm

Hi there

Replaced my air filter today and noticed there is a bit missing in air filter housing?
Allowing hot air from engine to reach the air filter.

Ive quickly checked realoem to find out the missing part is called Bypass Valve and comes with cars equipped with Cold Climate Package S842A

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=ZW62-EUR-11-2010-E70N-BMW-X5_40dX&diagId=13_1368

Part No 13

My car being UK spec is not a cold climate spec but still i cant believe how this can be right.
The car is sucking the hot air directly from engine bay.

Anyone seen it or can have a quick look if this is missing in their cars as well?

Seriously guys

So many x5 owners
Over 60 post views

No one have 5 seconds to open a bonnet and have a quick look at your filter housing?

You dont need to take anything off. You can acctually see it on a left hand side if you look close. Either there is a cover or not and you can see your air filter through.

Please let me know if yours is same as mine?

Many thanks

My 2011 X5 is the same i thought a part had fell off and looked every where i could then went to the dealers and didn't really get much info no one seemed to know if a part is missing or not,the car doesn't seem to suffer so i never bothered any more about it. I would also be interested to know if there is something missing

Thanks for your input mate
Much appreciated

Waiting for more people.
Maybe we will actually find out something interesting.

Very weird design to be honest.

Hi , when I replaced my filter I accidentally knocked the blanking plate off
Luckily it only dropped onto pipe work in the bay
Reclipped it  back on .

That is very confusing lol

Is Your car equipped with Cold Climate option S842 by any chance?

After your reply I rang my dealer parts department and ask them to open up the diagram of air filter housing of my car.
They said there should be nothing in there for sure and that Bypass valve should only be fitted in conjunction with other heating element and different pipe.

So at least now I know we are not missing anything there, but why you would have a blanking plate fitted there is a mystery to me.
Maybe someone before you was confused as well and made one up?

I changed my filter a couple of weeks back
Mine had a blanking plate, definitely not an open hole
Perhaps think about a covering piece of tape until correct blanking plate is sourced

I’d post a picture though out of country at present [sorries]
