I'm in a position where someone wants to buy my E53 3.0d and I have a choice of 2 E70 3.0d's with 245PS and I'm in dilemma as to whether to change.
We've had the E53 nearly 10 years, re-mapped it when bought it to 272PS / 525NM and done 275,000KM of untroubled time in it, but it's still a great car and goes very well indeed.
I have choice between 2008 with 6-speed auto with 125k KM or 2012 with 165k KM and 8-speed auto
Both have mostly same sorta extras except 2008 has Moonroof, 2012 does not. 2012 has some sort of adaptable suspension?, 2008 doesn't.
I'm being offered EUR 10,500 for mine, the 2008 is EUR 22,000 the 2012 EUR 24,500 so I basically have to find between EUR 10-15k
What do you guyz think? Is there a big difference between E53 and E70? (I've not driven an E70)
Is the E70 a much better vehicle?
Is it worth making the switch or do I keep the E53 (which I wudn't mind at all)

Re: E53 or E70, which one?
I had a really nice late E53 3.0d for three years which i loved but when I changed to a facelift E70 40d I couldn’t believe what an improvement it was over the previous model. Night and day in my experience, markedly better in every department.

Replying to agree with dgms's points - do it! You might find the E70s a bit underpowered compared to your E53. I did when I moved from my mapped E53 even to the 40d...although m/s mode is fun
Also to add, wow that's strong money for a high mileage E53! I think UK prices for second hand cars generally must be a bit lower than the rest of Europe.

I'll probably get this re-mapped too to about same PS/NM as my E53
Yes Lux cars do tend to hold value a bit higher than elsewhere, good if you're selling, not necessarily if you're buying :'(

If it’s a 40d with the 8sp box then you should have 600Nm on tap already.
I think the box can take a maximum 700Nm.
ECUs have to be removed from the car to be remapped due to the way BMW have locked them, but Jason can advise if you send him a PM

It's the single turbo 3.0d not the SD or 4.0d
