so in october in my area analogue tv stops and the digital only signal starts!

from your experience is it worth changing to digital set up in the x or not?

i watch the tv a wee bit when waiting for the wife to finish work and shop and sh*t!!

how easy is it to do?

Not worth it unless sitting still - can be a lottery even then.

Straight swap but they are very expensive or do the cheaper way and get a £30 to £50 unit off eBay and splice it into the AV channel.

My 4.8 came with a digital TV - nice when you're in a good reception area, but its a lottery like Sanj says - and it's rubbish on the move if you have TV in motion enabled. The digital amps cost a fortune OEM,if you must, get a 12V portable freeview box and add it to the system like Sanj says. IMHO its not worth it to buy the expensive OEM setup, though - I nearly did, with my previous X, the 3.0i which preceded my 4.8, and I am really pleased I saved the money!!! i suppose once analogue is dead, though, you won't have any kind of TV viewing option unless you get a £50 box or go OEM. Just imagine when analogue / FM radio is killed off.........it'll be CDs Ipods or nothing on our old Xes!!!!

Oh my goodness, I just want to all day long in this car, its awesome.... I loved the 3.0i - it was my first BMW and it was a nice spec, good colour and the 3.0i engine performed well given the big body of the X, with fuel consumption around 24mpg at its best, but always leaving me feeling like I was missing my old Range Rover 4.6 engine somehow....

Anyway, one day I suddenly felt like you only live once and it could end anytime, and I want a 4.8is before I shuffle off this mortal coil........and I set about looking for it, found it, fetched it last weekend and I couldn't be happier with the performance. Plus its an AUC so the glitches get sorted and even the next MOT isn't a problem as that insurance is included too. There's so much expensive stuff to go wrong, though, that I think I'll take the pricey BMW insurance option next year when this one runs out......
And as for the fuel consumption, well, knock me over with a feather, its 22.9 mpg so far.....not far from the 3.0 and soooooooo much more exciting to drive.....

The cars look very similar, but that's where it seems to end as the driving experience couldn't be more different. I managed to find one with about £10K extra options, so that's nice, too, especially as one of them is the auxiliary heating that the diesel guys brag about in the winter - it was a pricey option for the 4.8 at about £1000!!

I love the Le Mans blue as well, will have to bore everyone with loads more pics once its not quite so dirty. All I can say, is, if you can, GO FOR IT!!!!!

If its just something watch while passing the time away, I had a 100gb media player installed so i just watch my downaloaded avi files on my front nav screen when i'm waiting for her in doors. I still have analogue TV which isn't due to be turned off until 2012 in my area but the signal is poor so i never bother with it.

Thats a really good idea actually... there is usually nothing on the TV that I actually want to watch so I just end up watching anything for the sake of it!

What was the media player and how does it connect?

I also purchased the car kit and remote eye, which i have installed in my front ash tray out of sight.
It requires a 12v supply and the video and audio signals actually go to pins on the TV and Radio modules in the boot. I have a diagram somewhere of which pins are which on the TV module.
When i want to put something new onto it i just unplug from the car and connect to laptop using USB lead.

I spliced into the pins on the radio module so as to install the aux lead into the boot, this is the one that is behind the nav screen. I used this so i could get stereo sound from the media player using the intravee 6 to play previously selected sound. Otherwise you can just use the mono on the TV module.

How does £40 sound to get a media player hooked up?

A PS2 to be precise (under £20), a PS2 remote tailor made for DVD playback so perfect for media (£4) and an IR for the messages to go back to the unit in the boot (£1.99, yes £1.99)! Plus some wiring and then the power, a cig lighter unit (£8), the memory card, which should come with the PS2 as standard original kit - my maths close?

Jig managed to get some free software that allows you to have the unit hardwired into the car and then a hard drive of your choice for the PS2 to boot off of. The picture orientation is possible to set to widescreen and it stays like that for every film! No messing, just press the power and a full list comes up - every time you start up. Press play, etc and you get the film - switch off and come back to the same film and you get the option to continue where you left off.

I said no at first and had an old KJGloal option and then I took the plunge. Now my 5 year old won't go anywhere unless it's in the X. Plus I gave him the remote and in less than 2 minutes he was away with it! Excellent for that price - thoroughly recommended and pop along to the meet if you can to see, if you like. Can do some pics if you wish but it's Jig's baby...

Hi

If you select TV from the NAV screen and press button you will get the auto tune option and just press on that. You may have had the digital switchover enabled in your area so unless you have the digital Tv tuner in your car I'm afraid you won't get any analogue tv. I've got a 2004 and mines analogue. I'm in London so won't switch until 2012 but after that I won't have tv unless I change my tuner. You can see if it's happened in your are by checking the digital switchover website.
