N57 timing chain

Post by StuBeeDoo » Sat Nov 18, 2017 10:43 am

Good morning all.  I have recently been looking around for an F25 30d, but have started to come across tales of timing chain woe.  I have been aware of the N47 problems for a few years but hadn't realised that the N57 also had the timing chain on the rear of the engine as well.

My original plan had been to buy a 2014-on high-miler.  Have BMW resolved the chain issue with mods to later engines, or is it still on-going?  If there have been updates to spec to overcome the issue, roughly when were they introduced?

I have to be honest, if BMW haven't resolved this I'm seriously considering defecting to Audi or Merc.  I know they have their own issues, but at least the timing chains are on the front of the engines.

TIA
Stuart.

So far we have had just one unconfirmed timing chain issue reported with any of the N57 series powerplants.  The one that could be popped up in the last week and is still being investigated.  It is far more common on the V8 engines due to chain guide failures.  The N47 has now been replaced by the B47 which (so far) seem OK.

Putting the chain at the rear did seem a bit odd, so BMW must have a lot of confidence in everything being OK for those parts  ;)
