20" Tyres

Hi guys,does anyone have experience of using Toyo Proxes in 20" staggered set up on their E70? any suggestions on non runflats appreciated.

Before you fit them check the overall circumferences are closely matched otherwise you are risking your transmission.

Non runflats have and are being used by lots on here and provide a softer ride due the less stiff sidewalls used.  I still use RFT for winter and summer sets however the 19” winter set gives a less crashy ride on local roads.  They also seem quieter too - and I would expect 20” non-RFT summer tyres to be the same 

There are non-runflat options for the ‘*’ marked (BMW Approved with matched circumferences) which brings the costs down.  If you hear any odd noises or jerkiness in the diffs/transfer box then it is usually a sign that the transmission is unhappy.

It doesn’t happen to everyone but it is becoming more prevalent as Owners choose not to fit tyres matched to the car.

Ive used the 20" Toyos for a good 3 years on both my E70,s
I had them on my 3.0sd for a good couple of years with no problems whatsoever.
And ive got them on my current 40d. Way better ride than the RFT,s.
BUT they are NOT star marked. If i was to replace them ide be looking into the Michelin latitude star marked tyres, although they are more expensive than the Toyos...

Is there any particular reason why you'd move to star marked tyres when you have years of experience of Toyos across multiple X5s with no issues?

(incidentally, I also have them on mine with 20" staggered wheels but don't have enough experience of them to really comment either way)

I had a look at 19'' star marked non- RFT. The front RFT has a load rating of 107, but the star marked non-RFT fronts only have a rating of 103, which I understand is a difference of 100kgs ! 

Given that the E70 needs fronts with a 107 load rating, 103's don't meet the spec. I was told by one tyre place that the 103's were for the E53.

I had a problem with non star tyres. My E70 on non-star rubber made a whining noise at 60 MPH, not above or below, just at 60.  Put star marked RFT's back and the noise disappeared.

The Toyos were great on my E53 but non star marked tyres on E70s particularly staggered setups, have led to many problems with transfer boxes. Not worth the saving as transfer boxes costs ££££££££.  Plus with a 7 seater E70, there is no room for a spare wheel so driving around on non RFTs without a spare is a bit of an extra gamble really.  Not one I would personally take.

On my current car X5 40d, shortly after i bought it, i had to have the transfer box replaced. Now while this wasnt a result of fitting the Toyo,s, as the car still had the Bridgestone RFT,s fitted. I am still  a little wary of the non star marked tyres, i asked the BMW tech when they did the transfer box, and they said the star marking is more to do with the compound of the tyres, rather than the rolling radius,,,Ive been told many different explanations,,,,,,!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!............., , otherwise idve fitted the Michelins straight away..
The Toyos have been on since April, with [touch wood] no problems...
