EGR problem on a 9 month old X3
EGR problem on a 9 month old X3
Mrs M's 9 month old X3 20D stopped today with a faulty EGR.
To be fair to BMW they came out straight away and replaced it and everything is back to normal. However this is due entirely down to short journeys and it will happen again so she was told.
That's a bit strange because she's averaging about 1000 miles a month and those include motorway and other reasonable trips!
I know nothing about this problem but the search facility clearly shows there are issues with these units.
I'm not going to bypass the EGR, the car is covered by warranty but what on earth is going on because the car couldn't be better used if you tried!

I can't believe so many cars and manufacturers have so many problems with EGR valves. When I had the Golf I was also on the VAG forum, so many problems reported on there, it wasn't a case of if you have an EGR go, it was when it would go !
Modern EGR valves aren't simple like the E53 ones that you can just remove and clean out or bypass , the electronic ones can't be bypassed without re mapping the ECU. Also they now even have there own thermostat and cooler.
Why can't they seem to make reliable EGR valves these days.

Re: EGR problem on a 9 month old X3
It can't be a journey length or fuel type issue with EGR's as mine went on a shitty old petrol Astra that was WELL used.
Luckily that was a cut out beer cant and 20 minutes work. Assuming these are more tricky? Does the car break down or go into limp mode?
If it's limp mode I would just keep getting BMW to replace it until warranty ends then find a solution that a warranty won't prevent.
If BMW have to keep changing them under warranty they might be forced to take the issue seriously.

Re: EGR problem on a 9 month old X3
Quick update.
The car has now developed a grinding noise and is booked in to be looked at. This wasn't the case prior to the EGR being fitted so I'm guessing you don't have to be a rocket scientist to add 2 and 2......
Only issue is the first available time to look at the car with a loan car for some days (due to the isofix recall) is a month away.
Mrs. M is not happy at the moment

Need to get mine in for the ISOFIX - oddly my Mrs is off on Mat-leave too so need it done but don't know when.
Do we know what it is they need to do?

Was chatting to the dealer only yesterday about this, it involves removing the rear bench and sending it across to the "workshop", to have the isofix mounts strengthened (welded).

Re: EGR problem on a 9 month old X3
My EGR packed up last week. It's 7 months old and has only done 4k miles.
The wife uses it mainly but unfortunately she only works a couple of mile up the road so it's running cold a lot of the time.BMW never tried to lay blame on anyone but I hope they don't try turning it around on us if it packs up again in the future and needs to be replaced again.

Had the Egr replaced you n both the x5 and the X1 just the other day and it was quite high mileage for a 18 month old
