Hi All,

My car (2005 3.0d sport) judders quite badly when braking at about 60-70mph. Its not very noticable when braking at lower speeds.

There is no juddering or cluncking noise when you are driving it.

New discs have been fitted today under warranty,they were only 6 weeks old, as the garage thought that they might have warped, but the juddering is still there!

Has anyone experienced this before? Any ideas as to what it could be?

Could be a seized caliper too. Does it pull to one side at all when braking?

No it doesnt, i had asked my garage to check the calipers while the discs were off just in case!

After reading threads from this and other x5 sites it does sound to me its the wishbone bushes!

Not sure what to do, replace the whole wishbone @ £80.00 for each side or £60.00 for both bushes?

Your garage should be able to tell you if the wishbone bushes are worn and show you to confirm. changing parts on somebody's opinion can be an expensive hobby. Are you confident the garage has made a good job of fitting the discs and are there any signs of hot-spots on the discs. If rust or dirt was not cleaned from the face of the hub correctly before fitment it wont matter how new the discs are they will still vibrate. In my garage we are lucky enough to have a tool called a procut brake lathe that can totaly eliminate brake judder as its skims the discs while still mounted on the car and can even overcome a bent hub. Maybe look for somebody in your area that has one but they are common as cost over £5000 when new.
Still not ruling out bushes but 90% of judder is down to bad discs.
where bushes are concerned i prefer to replace just the bush and leave the genuine arms on rather than replace with cheap new ones. I think my bushes were £22 each and not hard to fit with a decent press but next time i would fit power-flex solid ones.even easier.

Bushes are a well known issue on E53s - had to have them done on my first e53 after only 40k miles.

Hi Dave,
Yes totaly confident in the garage, he has confirmed that it is the bushes. Mechanic suggested to keep the original arms and replace the bushes only.
Dealer wants 30 quid each for the bushes. I was thinking of replacing them with better ones but not sure weather to stick to original parts.
Are they to be had cheaper somewhere else?

replaced mine with FEBI ones. they are very high quality and made to oe standards or by the same firm as oe. we use them a lot and never have any problems.
see what you can find. usually available on ebay but go either genuine/ powerflex of febi. no cheap ones its just not worth it.
hope you get it sorted and get back to enjoying the x

Fitted powerflex front thrust arm bushes to mine. Means I never have to worry about them again. Completely eliminated the Judder under braking.

Where did you buy them from? How many bushes did you replace, just both wishbone bushes?

I replaced the bottom arms complete with factory original ones, but the thrust arms I replaced the big bushes in with powerflex ones from pheonixmotorsport.

Does anyone know what the arm is called where these bushes fit in? Just looking on the Web to see if i can get the whole arm with the bush included. Are they the wishbone arms?

I have superflex bushes fitted in mine, very similar to powerflex but are encased in a metal bush and have to be press fitted into the arm the same as BMW OEM.

Item 7 and 8 are the bush part only.
