The forum suggests the OEM method due to rules
Nevertheless, & with some imagination
Obtain said disc (s) or Usb pen drive from “dealer”
Once received you should also receive / require a Fsc code to activate the discs and allow install, the Fsc code is paired to chassis number, so very much a use once affair, allbeit I “believe” the “dealer” will provide a use once or lifetime code to furnish future updates

Once both are received, insert disc/Usb and system will Auto install and request the Fsc code to be entered.
The disc method takes circa 50 minutes, Usb is quicker, either option can be stopped and started so doesn’t have to be done in one go, however if you intend to leave install running, it’s prudent to hook up a battery charger.

With 2017 map updates you benefit from 7 digit postcode entry, allbeit I believe it was an earlier update that allowed this.

No FSC Codes, or USB system for the E53.  Just obtain an up to date map DVD (Mk4) or CD (Mk3) and insert it into the drive.  It stays in permanently.

Updating the firmware is more tricky and really should be done with a Dealer firmware CD as any issues during the update can ‘brick’ the Nav computer unit.  Some alternative suppliers also corrupt the language database for voice commands leaving you with parts in French!

:ant: Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.

Dealership only if you want to stay within the rules. Not cheap
