SNP plan total ban of older cars from 4 cities by 2020

Post by gs223 » Thu Sep 07, 2017 8:37 pm

Story: http://www.heraldscotland.com/news/1551 ... crackdown/

I know all these cities and generally they are pretty windy and the air is usually fresh and clear. Seems like an exercise to punish the motorist, and to get the Green MSP's onside. Scotland's oil? Seems they don't want it used...

If they want to improve the air, why not start with:
  • buses - there are loads of them as there is no tube
  • taxis - quite a few are pretty old
  • older vans and lorries
  • burning of wood etc for heating (one can often smell it)

Hi

You could also add to the list Airplanes and their consumption of fuel, and all the various sorts of power stations as they also cause pollution.

That would be interesting if they had to pay tax, but I guess we would just end up paying more  :(

Maybe worth pointing out that In 2015, Scotland generated 59% of its electricity consumption through renewable sources and that Scotland has 85% of the UK's hydro-electric energy resource, much of it developed by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board in the 1950s.

Although Scottish, I'm not a fan of the SNP.

It seems everyone is bashing us diesel car drivers these days. I'm all for cleaner air, but I feel a bit hard done by: I bought a diesel car because we were told they were better for the environment... until they weren't. I would like an electric version in the future (though no idea how I'm going to charge it as I don't have a driveway or much chance of parking anywhere near my house), but the models and infrastrucure wasn't there when I last bought. I'm concerned that when I go to trade in my current car in 3 years time I'll get next to nothing for it.

OK, I didnt buy a diesel car because we were told they were better for the environment, I bought one because the model that fitted my budget was a diesel - cos 9/10 of the range was diesel!

It'll be allright in the end. If it isn't allright it isn't the end

A bit more about the Amazon/delivery-van-generated pollution: https://www.standard.co.uk/news/transpo ... 50566.html

And Uber/mincab-generated pollution: https://techcrunch.com/2015/08/26/uber-london-impact/
