Exhaust mod, 2nd go
Exhaust mod, 2nd go
Awhile ago i out on some oval dummy tips, i couldnt mmake mind up between the 4 pipes of the big boys or more modern oval outlets. i changed my mind and now attach pics of my version of how to get the 4 pipe look at a cost of £24 and £5 for the chemical metal epoxy.
first you need a 1m lenght of 3" which i think is near the standard size, stainless steel, cut to size. any size from 150mm to 200mm depends how you want to fix. i found it best to fasten the tips together to add stabilty. i was going to drill and bolt but stainless drilling was a nightmare. i used a chemical metal type paste which was excellent.
The choice of outlet lenght is purely what you fancy. i saw an X5 in our road and put mine about the same.
another idea i thought of later, to add much more stabilty, i could have used longer tubing and epoxied to th eactual silencer box. it may have worked but hindsight as they say.
heres the ebay link , next day delivery. polished or not to choose from i bought a 1m lenght . asked them to cut to size, 4 x 150 and a lenght left over. no idea what to use it for and as for trying to cut it.

Photos are follow on, the secret is , the pipes have to stick straight out so you need to cut out a fair bit more plastic than you would think. it would be great to drill 2 circles and put the pipes through try that and the pipes point to the ground, so you have to then remove more bit by bit to allow then to be horizontal. i sealed the pipes in with Black mastic held with duct tape while it set . roughen the steel to give it something to grip to. if anyone needs any tips gimme a shout. May not be everyones cup of tea but i like em. much better than a naked behind
on fitting to the car. you may find they pull the plastic out a little. to counteract this, i put cable tie over the rear of the pipes then another one linked on and secured underneath, as you tighten the tie wrap it pulls the pipes straight. as a precaution i put 2 small black self tappers through. so finished and no rust .
i am selling the first ones i made if anyone wants them, they are chrome but tend to rust unless polished well.
they cost me more than the stainless version. but £25 all posted will buy them, pm me. they are the last photos.

Re: Exhaust mod, 2nd go
Is this a mod for the diesel Engine?
So this is attached purely to the exhaust flap covers?

Hi
i like the 4 pipes but then I had an X5 4.4 with exhaust 4 pipes, but then again I like the 4.6 /4.8i exhausts style as well and in you MkII exhaust they look more finished to me possibly because you used the proper exhaust tips.
Very ingenious as others have cut the diesel exhaust pipes and and had probs loss of power or black soot onthe rear of the car or had extra pipes made but was a lot more involved and or expensive to do
I agree with you that either look better than a black plastic panel in my opinion, but would stick with the MKII Version.

Re: Exhaust mod, 2nd go
i only copied what another member had done, cant find the thread or would post it. He though bought some very expensive rear oval type trims which were on Ebay around £130 , the firsts ones i got from Ebay were £33 for the pair, they started rusting after a week even with no heat. i complained and got a 50% refund.
The tips you see now are just plain simple 3" polished stainless steel available on ebay for £24 so a far better product that wont rust, looks better for less cash.

Re: Exhaust mod, 2nd go
I put 4.8 rear silencers on my 3.0d that fit and look right.. a lot easier than cutting things. ::)
Re: Exhaust mod, 2nd go
nice , easier if you have easy access to under the car but im a roadside mechanic, are they a straight swop then for the original back boxes ? no other mods needed

Re: Exhaust mod, 2nd go
Real easy swap, the 4.8 pipe diameter slips just nice and tight over the original 3.0d pipe then a nice seem of weld all the way round the joint. All brackets and stuff are exactly the same
Re: Exhaust mod, 2nd go
Did you notice any difference in sound or performance with the 4.8 rear silencers

On a similar subject, how difficult is it to remove the chrome tail pipes on the 4.6l. Mine could do with a refurb proper clean up and polish.
