What type of phone/Operating System?  Bluetooth is now well into Ver 4.

However your phone will need to support Bluetooth Version 1 with Address book software version 1.1

If they aren't supported then the phone may pair but do nothing else depending upon what it is.

BMW got implementation of Bluetooth completely wrong!  If it won't work then you may either need to buy the very last module variant BMW ever released for the E53, change the phone, or buy a Parrot type system.

Currently using galaxy note 4, it pairs and can dial out using stereo and make/end call  but  just uses the actual phone on the call rather than hands free...and phone book empty too....

Sounds suspiciously like the HTC phone I tried with the E46 (same hardware) and it did the same thing.  Never got it working and sent the phone back to EE.  IPhones all work fine regardless of age.

Sometimes with the phone book it can be fixed by having the contacts on the SIM rather than phone memory.  I don't know a way round the non-use of the hands free system though  :(
