You didn't answer as to whether you have had any previous problems with your gearbox or if the speedo stops working when you get trans failsafe.

You really need to get the vehicle codes read to find which system is throwing the code.  Several will put the car into this mode and not all are transmission related.  It could be in the brakes, tyres, steering, fuel/air system.

Voltages wise your battery is fine and so is the alternator output, though 14.7 is a little high - do you mean 14.07?  Meters will vary a little so it is still in limit.

Okay folks.had a diagnostic bloke down today to do a full scan'and there were loads in there.weather some are historic or what i dont know or probably me disconnecting the battery.he reckons its more than likely the angle sensor thats causing all the issues so gonna start there.also the glow plugs came up saying they are all gone.find that hard to believe really.also battery voltage showing 11.2 v but showing 12.6 yesterday.anyway going to do some testing tomoz.ordered new 100ah battery,6 glow plugs and steering angle sensor for collection on tuesday from ecp.

Add a glowplugs controller too.  If the plugs have gone - which is very common - there is a good chance the controller will soon follow.  Was available recently from ECP.  I think the OEM is a badged Beru unit.

Use code HOLIDAY75 to get discount for the next few days,

+1 on glowplug controller Biru as said is OEM available off EBay new @ £65
You have to remove inlet manifoldto do the glowplugs , so that makes it " easier "to get to  the controller as it's bolted to the engine block below the glow plugs. I say easier as I've done mine and found it hard work getting access and especially getting the large multiplug off the controller even when the inlet manifold is off.
Controller and plugs is a common fault on BMW diesels, loads of how to do' son YouTube.
Also spray the glowplugs with lashings of penitrating fluid and repeat over an hour, or whilst changing the controller, as you don't want to sheer any off
