Differential and transfer case oils?

Post by sleepyfolk » Sun Aug 20, 2017 1:30 am

For the front and rear diffs am I right in thinking castrol syntrax 75/90 is the right stuff - is it 2 litres for each diff?

And transfer case just 1 litre - but which oil?

I remember reading that the pre facelift and the facelift cars have different oil. Best way is putting your Vin into real OEM and if you go to the serviceable items or transfer box page it will list the part number for the oil. I then cross reference this by just typing that number into Google or EBay.

I got that far but when you google the part number you get a load of websites that look a bit rubbish selling oil I've never heard of!

And I still couldn't see in real oem how much I needed?

The oil looks like Dextron 3 automatic transmission fluid.
I'm sure KKX5 will be able to best advise about which oil is best and the correct amount.

I am not sure about pre facelift, but facelift requires special oil (fluid) for transfer case. I did mine and bought fluid from bmw dealer for about $60 AUS per litre. Luckily only requires .7 lt.

If you have a "transfer case oil abrasion error" changing fluid alone won't fix it, you need to reset transfer case with software like INPA or Rhinegold.
