I'm afraid in the E53 X5 its more than likely the radio unit which has become faulty - its called the BM54 unit and is in the boot near the tin hat compressor cover.  If you search for Baris on here, he repairs and upgrades them - apparently a good service.  My BM54 unit was replaced under warranty earlier this year, its not cheap and take care with ebay offerings as they are known to become faulty with dry solder joints etc, hence being flogged off on ebay to unsuspecting buyers.

My 4.8 presented in the identical way, with one speaker not working - definitely not the speaker, it is the BM54 unit.

Thanks  for that I was thinking about  putting  an after market radio with sat nav and Bluetooth, so I think it's made my mind up
