Re: E70 X5 40M Propshaft failure
Was is all E70's effected or just 10 plate and on?
Re: E70 X5 40M Propshaft failure
Only those in a specific manufacturing date range in 2010 and 2011 were listed in the original QE document.

Re: E70 X5 40M Propshaft failure
When I queried this from BMW UK, Their response was,
"Thanks for getting in contact about your propshaft recall query.
Below I have enclosed your vehicles recall status.
Defect Code Defect Description Done
0026230100 E7x Check the front propeller shaft, replace if applicable Yes
0061210400 E70 E71 Program control units (CAS) Yes
From the information above I can confirm your vehicle has had the recall conducted, to obtain further information on this matter I recommend contacting your local BMW Centre as they will be able to provide yourself with further information. "
Does this mean they checked propshaft and was fine(no need changing) or simply they replaced it?

That's exactly the same email I got.
Next time the car is in I'm going to ask the dealer to recheck.
In the meantime I've saved the email just in case of catastrophic failure.

Re: E70 X5 40M Propshaft failure
I think it just means the recall action was marked as done.....the Dealer will probably need to pull a detailed service history to see what was done.
That should be possible as long as the investigating Dealer has not changed hands or gone bust. If that happens then they seal the records which makes life much harder as only BMW GB can then see them.

They replied to my email.
"We checked the propshaft on 20.06.2014 at 51523 miles.
No action was required. "
This means even if they recalled that haven't done any modifications or change parts. >:(

Re: E70 X5 40M Propshaft failure
They would only have replaced it if it was outside limit. The recall was a 'check' the 'replace' only applied if it failed inspection so it sounds as if at that time it was still OK.
Of course there is still the 'human factor' about the quality of the inspection itself but that is always a problem.
Propshafts shouldn't break so this is beginning to show there could be an issue. The rules unfortunately mean that BMW only has to fix it voluntarily if an issue is found. And they won't if it costs them money or reputation to admit there is a fault. The whole system stinks!!

Re: E70 X5 40M Propshaft failure
Guys,
Was driving to work this morning on A1M and all of a sudden loud vibration and a bang!. I immediately pulled over to hard shoulder. Called RAC and they checked the car and suspected it was either transfer box or propshaft gone. (What a coincidence, I made post this morning about my propshaft recall). It does not show any errors on the computer. Starts fine and but when driving(RAC mechanic drove the few meters) slowly, it shudders and making banging noise.
Car was on flatbed to BMW dealership and I'm awaiting the dreadful news..Gutted..Should have extended my AUC warranty last October.
Will update when I hear from BMW....

Re: E70 X5 40M Propshaft failure
Hi Everyone,
Apologies that I never updated this thread, it has been on my mind for ages that I needed to. Damage....£6000. My local BMW dealership and service centre (Specialist Cars Tring) were brilliant. They took the problem seriously, they fought my corner with BMW and I manged to get BMW to cover pretty much all of the repair and I got a brand new 5 series to drive whilst I was waiting for the car back!! All out of warranty and I did not buy the car from Tring so well done those guys.
At the end of the day this is a major problem if you are unlucky enough to be affected. Everyone should ensure that their car is not at risk because when it goes wrong it can go badly wrong and clearly BMW are aware of this or they would not have stumped up the cash. Stay safe!

Re: E70 X5 40M Propshaft failure
Glad you got an almost complete success and hopefully a lower bill. I'm sure they know it's an issue and are keeping quiet. Personally I feel there should be a recall. Perhaps a report to DVSA might trigger some interest. There is an email address you can send an initial issue in to and they will send you a form to complete and submit.

Re: E70 X5 40M Propshaft failure
Just thought I would add that this happened on my 12/2010 40d last month. I had only had the car 2 months and I was lucky that I was 400m from the garage and I could roll most of the way with no additional damage. The universal joint had corroded and it snapped off where the pin is located in the shaft part. Thankfully the indy I bought it from paid the repair bill.
Re: E70 X5 40M Propshaft failure
Front or rear? Mine is about the same age as yours so I can have a look at it and see what state mine are in.

Re: E70 X5 40M Propshaft failure
Just had the front prop replaced which the the indy garage paid for under their platinum warrenty. I got under the car myself and found excessive play in the rear uj on the front prop. Also was experiencing some whirring noise when coasting, hence my reason to check. Car is a 2010 40d.
