X5 30d - Retrofitting M50d brakes - Info Required?

Post by R99 » Sun Jul 16, 2017 12:12 am

Hi all,

Taking delivery of my 2011 X5 this week coming, and I have my eye on a brake upgrade at some point.

I want to consider fitting the M50d brake set up to the car - I know both the front and rear should be a 'plug and play' bolt on considering that the 30d and 50d share the same front and rear hubs, and also the same master cylinder etc.

However, does the car need to be coded after the brake change to reflect the bigger set up for DTC reasons etc, and also to alleviate any issues with a softer brake pedal / pedal travel?

Thanks!

James

Looking at the options I foresee it being an expensive and most likely unnecessary upgrade,
I'm sure it shall fit though think the caliper carriers may be different as the 5.0d uses the parts from the M bins, therefore different struts to mount the caliper carrier. Though it's my thoughts so may have to check on realoem, it wouldn't be the first time I'd been wrong, however you should see the change is probably more involving than a relatively simple caliper swap

Many people change the pad disc combination for aftermarket only to later prove counter productive, performance and durability is best had with OEM stuff,

Looking through parts bin there is a notable difference between the front calipers whilst the rear seems standard across the range.
If it was my monies, I'd strip the original calipers & paint and install new anti squeal springs a set of brakes over twhat you have will give little benefit

No coding will be required with the change.

Realoem will list the parts you need, but to be honest the standard brakes are more than good enough as said above.
