Tesco half price oil

Tesco are selling 2L of full synthectic all grades for £6.00,  down from £12.00
seems a good buy, not that i buy much.
Has the BMW LL-04 and ACEA C3 rating on the bottle

One thing I've learned about Tesco products is..
Tesco's "finest" is below average every where else... & they have conned us into accepting total grunge as nice...... when its actually 2nd rate sh*t.

Cheap motor oil for a car that ABSOLUTELY MUST have good oil..... recipe for expensive disasters in the making I think.
The only oil I would ever grudging buy from Tesco is a can of 3in1 for oiling bike wheels.

I can vouch for their screen wash being watered down crap, the same with antifreeze which I could improve by pissing in it... & even their own branded washing up liquids etc.... all crap.

It may well meet the technical specifications.... but how long it lasts when you have given the vehicle a good thrashing & towed a caravan for 300 miles etc... by which point it will probably be no better than pouring WD40 in the engine.
I did a lot of work with lubricants when I worked for GM, and it was shocking how short a lifetime some oils had.

Tesco Engine Oil...... I wouldn't... unless you change it EVERY month.

oooh    just bought as top up as sadly on my first long run it seemed to use some., its the one thing you cant check when buying a used car. or oil or water use till its too late.
i thought as it had the spec on it would have come from a big company refinery.
They dont sell finest oil  )  just this own label.
also thought as the fuel was no doubt from a big company that oil would be the same.

so can you inform,  it has 145,000 on clock, full history at an indy but dont know what grade is in. i tried to find out but like talking to pork with who answered phone so wanst impressed.

On first long trip 300 miles it went from top line of dipstick showing full to max to about halfway down the high/low  so it has used some, must admit i did let it rip to some high speeds, never used any in the usual journeys locally though with moderate speeds up to 60 mph, so what would cause high speed oil usage,  never see any smoke or anything white or blue,  i have a feeling its the extreme speeds that caused it when i was "testing"  empty motorway of course  ::)
would i maybe be better with a thicker grade of oil ? maybe a 10w ? rather than 5w  thanks

If its meets the spec, and presumably it does because it says so on the label, and that's a legally binding claim, then it meets the spec. Well spotted you should be fine with that

Tesco mid range scotch eggs are nice but the finest scotch eggs are horrible.  Just my opinion.

Re usage it also worth checking if a leak anywhere underneath, assuming the readings were taken in the same condition say first thing in morning when car was left overnight. A piece of clean card placed under the car will show up any leaks in the morning.

There are a couple of posts on website about usage and oil types see below but I think it's down to choice as some have tried a heavier oil or even mixed them, and even one post says Halfords recommend the 10-40 for the earlier engines so I am confused now.

Use the BMW spec (which it is), dont substitute other grades

Oil consumption may be significantly reduced by an oil change with the right stuff & a new filter.
The grade is 5w30 or 5w30  simple choice then lol

Oil consumption is quite possibly due to the crank case breather being the Nasty sponge filter type & splashing the oil into the intake & simply ingesting it..
It is worth checking this out & replace with a Centrifugal Vortex type... it is located under the engine cover at the back top of the engine & is a 5 minute swap out.

If you have a manky sponge oil separator & consuming that much oil, there is potentially significant risk or an engine runaway & destruction

As soon as i bought car and joined forum i did i found about about that, i called the indy B & M they are called  who had been servicing the car for years in Leeds and asked about that item, all i got was,  well , if the service says change it we do.  not very impressed as it felt like you were extracting teeth trying to get a bit of info. i even said i was going to keep it serviced there but still hardly chatty and seemed not bothered if i did or not.
i bought an air filter and the new vortex ,  air filter more crud in it than a farmers field and the breather, jeeez  just a black mess of gunge, looked like it had been there from new.  oh great thought it,  :'(

Anyway changed it all over but of course puts doubts in your mind as to why when they know its an important item they dont fit the new style. also you wonder have they done the things they are supposed to have or mugged the previous owner who maybe a bmw owner not knowing the first thing about cars as long as it starts and drives,  bit like the wife.  )
Not worrying now though, i will do bits at a time. Still the best car ive ever had though.

regarding the oil change, one member bought a vacuum type to suck it out of the dipstick tube,  wondered if this was a good way to do it, isnt there something about when you use the sump plug  it drains out any other crap in there as well which sucking out wouldnt.
Is the sump plug accessible without removing the undercover panels ?  must admit  havent been under yet and looked for it.

Many dealers now use vacuum extraction systems, but to me it just seems wrong as you suggest.

And from memory it is easy to get at.

I was told that it was to do with handling toxic waste and avoiding used oil on skin etc.  Just wear better gloves!

As I recall there is a flap in the undercover to gain access to the sump plug.
Are sure you have a suitably sized drain tub, ( mines a 20 litre one ) as the E53 holds about 8 lots I think, but when it runs out it will splash out of the tub or overflow an unsuitable one.
Don't do the job on your new blockpaved driveway.

I bought my X5  4.0d,m sport,2016 in Jan 2017.It was sold as a demonstrator/directors car,with 6000 miles on the clock and was only about 3 months old. Only a personal thing but ,I got the car an oil change so that I would know what was in it,and when it was done. I figured 6k in 3 months was a bit much,so as I say just a personal thing.  As for the op... no chance.  At the risk of stating the bleeding obvious..... oil is SO important.
