Dash lit up.
So the following four icons lit up and stay on when driving. Used the hidden menu to check battery and came back with 11.9V at ignition on and around 13.9V when engine running.
I think the battery is around 4 years old.

Re: Dash lit up.
The battery voltages are OK, my new battery toggles between 13.9 & 14.1 when driving.
11.9 at ignition 1 key setting is acceptable if she has been idle all night.
the symbol on the Left I think is Tyre pressure.... & the other is center diff lock.
if the diff lock switch is pressed, & at a slow crawl you turn the steering wheel lock to lock a few times, this should unlock the center diff.... You DO NOT want to drive on the roads with the diff locked... it WILL damage the diffs or drive shafts.
Suggest, disconnect the battery & touch the battery connection wires/leads together for a few seconds, then make a cuppa & reconnect the battery... this will probably clear the fault...
These vehicles are Female & can get grumpy for little or no reason.
Hope this helps.

I'll try that. Was reading up on the internet about transfer case actuator gearing going pop and giving the same symptoms and scaring myself. So your saying touch the pos and neg together after disconnecting? Ok.

Re: Dash lit up.
No diff locks on the E53 - which is why they are soft roaders. Could be a wheel sensor or level sensor gone down.
Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.

Ok. Dogs walked. Terminals disconnected. Enjoying said cuppa. Thunderstorm just kicking off and I'm about to touch the leads together. It's has a touch of the Gothic about it.

All done and no change. I'll live with it for a bit and let the garage take over. Cheers anyway.

How old is your car?
Just been through the same drama with my x3.
Do you have access do a computer and DIS software?
Likely suspects are -
- Wheel speed sensor
- Reluctor ring corrosion... which in turn breaks your speed sensor.

When you say 'wheel sensor' do you mean the abs sensor that comes with the brake pads?

Nada.
If you know where the pad sensor is then you'll be able to find the speed sensor. It is also called an abs sensor.
The speed/abs sensor cable runs to the actual hub whereas the pad sensor runs to the calliper.
The one that comes with the pads is just a pad sensor.

Re: Dash lit up.
Interesting about reluctor ring. Had one break on my old Audi A4 V6 rear drive shaft. Straight forward to replace. Need a scan on the system to isolate the faulty speed sensor, and invariably will be a bu**er to remove.

Re: Dash lit up.
Car booked in for tomorrow morning. Hopefully just a sensor related issue. Interesting reading on the other causes though.
If the diagnosis comes back with phrases such as 'module' and 'kaput' there will undoubtedly be a difficult conversation with the wife.
I'll post up the status tomorrow regarding car and marriage.

Dash lit up.
Good luck with both. If it turns out to be the speed sensor. get them to show you the bad one before they put another one in. If it's actually worn i.e. Something has rubbed the end away. Then replacing the sensor will not fix the issue, you'll just have another broken speed sensor.
My experience is that even the BMW garages are crap at identifying these issues and will generally spout some crap about gearboxes or sparkplugs.
Try and get a system scan with fault codes. Worth its weight in gold!!
