Hi guys just been and got the x5 serviced and they noted that I will need new rear brake pads quoted in region of £240 never mind that I have only covered 2000 miles since buying it under the auc scheme I would of thought they would have had them replaced but hey hoe my question being should I buy BMW pads does anyone know who makes BMW pads or can recommend a good pad I will changing them myself? Cheers in advance ps it's a 2012 40d

BMW pads are rebadged Pagid and you can get them from Eurocarparts.  You need to check your disc size as there are two and I think the 40d is the larger.  Just under £100 a set.  If the wear indicator triggers then you need one of those as well.

AUC does not cover wear and tear (that includes brake linings), though if they were that low then an honest dealer would have done it before you took on the car.  AUC is not always what you hope!

Did you check the iDrive Vehicle Information when you purchased the car?  That has brake pad status checks on it, wonder if a dishonest dealer could have reset it to read 38000 or 41000 miles (seems to be the numbers for newish pads) or if the pads had just been left as is?  Bit of a swiz if yours have only given 2000 miles. Maybe have a local garage check the pads first - BMW may just be saying you need pads when you don't. My E70 had fortunately had new pads and discs before I bought ot as an AUC as it had one of those 5 year service plans that allowed for pad and disc change. Plus I managed to squeeze in a service before the plan expired which was a bonus and saved a few hundred quid.
You can hardly trust the main dealers as far as you could throw them, I am pretty sure they do not do all the checks they claim they do on AUC.

Just a bit of a heads up if you are changing the rear pads yourself.
I think you need to release/reset the electric parking brake when you change the rear pads. I don't think it is as simple as mechanically winding it out, but needs doing via the car OBD port. It can be wound back by taking the motor housing off but it is not how a dealer would do it. :)

I don't know if the rear brakes on the X5 is different to the X6 but I replaced the rear pads and sensor on mine a couple of weeks a go after replacing the front disks and pads.
They are really easy to do if you are at all handy with tools.
The rear caliper on the X6 does not operate the e-brake so does not need to be wound out. As it is not linked to the e-brake it is essentially the same operation as a front caliper so the piston can be pushed straight back in and not turned in. It must have brake shoes on the rear for the e-brake. Not sure if the X5 is different.
I think I paid around £50 for a set of brembo rear pads from Eurocarparts after a discount. I bought them about 8 months ago when 2700 miles showed on the idrive but got fed up waiting on the milage dropping, it just stayed at 2700 miles.

E70/71 ebrake is a small drum brake operating on the inside of the rear disc.  Worth leaving it off (and chocking the front wheels) so you can at least turn the disc whilst doing the brakes  :)

Great guys fairly handy with tools and am not going to pay BMW for something that is fairly straight forward I didn't realise that the i drive can be set like that for the brakes I'm going to check them this morning and see what pad materials left just thinking about it will the idrive set of a warning about the breaks as it's on a count down even if I put new pads in or does the warning rely on the pad sensor? Can I buy a code reader to reset the idrive or is it a dealer affair? What code readers do you recommend? Sorry about all the questions

Do a search on youtube for resetting service intervals. It can be done via the mileage reset button to enter the service menu. Cant remember off the top of my head but it is fairly easy to do.
