Non Run Flat Tyres?

Hi Guys,

Not been on in a while as I've traded in my '57 plate X5 E70 for a 2016 X3 F25 2.0 D M sport. As the title suggests just wondering if anyone has fitted non RFT to their X3 ? Noticed that some of the handling traits displayed on my Z4 are mimicked on the X3, mainly the nervous tramlining over certain surfaces. I have all but eliminated this on my Z4 by fitting non RFT tyres. Has anybody else experienced this? If so would fitting non RFT help ? If so what tyres would recommend?

Congrats on the new trade-in, I have the exact same model and have experienced the same tramlining you speak off, not a nice feeling. I'm still stuck with Runflats, mainly for dealing with punctures, which I've now found out I have another one today after replacing one just two weeks ago....

For the winter months i have gone down to some 17" alloys and sottozero winter tyres . The difference in ride quality and noise over the 19" summer tyres is amazing. The plan is to move over from rft's to pirelli rosso's (non rft) in April when the summer wheels go back on the car.
Peter will be along soon enough to advise on his move from rft's to normal tyres . If memory serves me correctly je found less tramlining, and jumping around on M Sport suspension

My e46 tramlined badly.
Didn't have run flats

In my opinion it's got more to do with staggered large wheels.

My X3 doesn't tramline on staggered 19's , it was the road noise and frequency of punctures that puts me off them. Being low profile also makes them jump around on road seams and uneven repairs. I find the ride much more compliant with the winter set which is a square setup on 225/60/r17

Must depend upon tyres as our E46 330Cd Conv running on a staggered set has never tramlined.

My wife bought a 3 year old E46 325i back in the day, it was shocking at tramlining, once the tyres were worn and replaced it was fantastic, we wondered if they had rotated the tyres from the back ( non staggered SE )
I find that Runflats I've had are worse at tramlining, miles more so than normal tyres.

Many thanks for your responses, I'm pretty sceptical of the benefits of runflats tbh. Once they have had a puncture you're supposed to replace them as running them flat could cause unseen damage. I've only done 14000 miles so far so at this time don't need new tyres, but my minds made up that when I do I'm going to go with non Rft and carry a pump and tyre foam!
As for the actual brand of tyre? I've no idea

Buy a £7 plug kit aswell. I used one on my front offside tyre and it's perfect. Didn't even remove the wheel from the car and it was still inflated

Not to miss an opportunity - I have a pair of unused 275/40/19 non run flat Pirelli's for sale.
I meant to buy run flats, ordered the wrong ones, the garage fitted them before telling me so camskill wouldnt take them back >:(

Ended up buying a pair of run flats from the garage for £540 - what with the £330 the other 2 cost me I'm still crying now >:( >:(

Just non run flat rather than the run flats I wanted.

F25 with Pirelli RFTs 17" from memory and star marked Dunlops on inch smaller for winter - non runflat.
Handling and ride significantly better on the winters. I carry a Continental goo kit in the boot - make sure your goo is in date as it won't work otherwise.
Just put summers back on, dealer claims tracking ok and tramlining pronounced.
All summers near new front (2k miles perhaps) and rears brand new.
Dealer refused to repair nailed RfT even though it hadn't lost pressure - was tempted to take it to the tyre shop instead. Gave me the bull about not repairing rifts - couldn't be bothered with the argument and having to put a nailed tyre back on the car / taking more time out for repairs.
Apparently the goo kit wrecks the tyre carcass - not sure if this is just another main dealer sales ploy.

I was furious with BMW about a similar issue just last month. I had it in for a service and they said the back tyre has a screw in and sent me a picture of it hissing... They wanted £300 to fit a new one, which wasn't going to happen. The tyre was brand new and had only been on 2 weeks... BMW said the usual "we don't repair Runflats due to safety".

Took the car to a local garage, they said there was no leakage whatsoever, the inside of the tyre wall had not been penetrated and they were shocked that BMW would pull the screw out. The rule of thumb is that you never pull a nail/screw out if you aren't losing air. The garage didn't even charge me and left the tyre on and it passed the MOT at BMW a week later.... I bought some separate TMPS sensors which show the tyre to be stable.

My local BMW dealership is so bad, I am in the process of buying a website purely to name and shame them for everything they do.... I won't say on here, but I have video footage of a dealership that would tarnish their reputation big time.

I'm quite happy with the 18" Pirelli RFT on my f25 30D. Quite comfortable ride and no tramlining, unlike the previous e61 520d, which I did change to non RF, and made it a totally different car.
