I use Carly.
I also use VCDS for VW
The Carly app, like others have said is foolproof, even compared to VCDS.

fault code reader
Re: fault code reader
Hi snrbrtsn,
My apologies I may have mislead you. When I was referering to CAN I meant do I ever need to read it, can I read it. Do I ever need to do anything with it. I realise its string (ones and zero) data between processors. Can Carly read it. That sort of stuff. I am grateful for your reply though.
For the price I am going to order it.
Thanks.

Re: fault code reader
I have a vague recollection that it doesn't not work with an E53 over a certain age. 2006/7 springs to mind. whilst it is only vague recollection, I believe this is the reason I never purchased one when I looked at it previously. There was definitely a technical , rather than cost, reason that I did not buy it for my car (mine is E53 X5 3.O D Sport 2004)

That may explain the fail I had yesterday on a 2006 E83

Re: fault code reader
I went to download the Carly App and buy. Most of the reviews where very negative. This has put me off. The support and understanding was pretty damning.
Now I know its had some good reviews here, however I bought the K line cable which came with free software.
I will start a new post on experiences.

Re: fault code reader
Carly App needs Carly dongle, or the stated cable. It won't work with any other dongle.
