Tinting windows
Tinting windows
I've been looking at getting the back windows tinted on the x5
there are a couple of companies local to me but they are asking over £400
there is a company close to work who do the pre-cut film kit in a tougher film .... needed because of the alaskan malamute and border collie who excel at nose art on the back window
that kit is only £65 and i can get it picked up so no shipping either
it's been a very long time since i tinted windows and i was wondering if anyone here has done it and if so how much of the car do you need to strip down ??
I dont mind if it takes me the whole weekend if it saves me £240

Re: Tinting windows
Hi Ian ST,
I did mine last weekend.....
If you are taking some previously done tint off, then this is a messy sticky job.
To tint virgin glass is MUCH easier.
I have tinted lots of cars, & the X5 is by far the most difficult to tint with the door glass in situ.
The rear quarter windows & tail gate are a sinch because the surrounding trim easily pings off.
The door glass is a total Ball-Ache on the X5 due to the deep trim over hang... and Believe Me... it is soooo much easier to remove the glass & fit the tint on a table top.
There is a technique for removing the sun-shade pillar on the rear doors - or you will destroy the door cards..
If you are near or in the West Mids, I will gladly help you do the tints.
Cheers
Grant B

Re: Tinting windows
well the good news is that the glass is fresh and virginal
i'm assuming that the door card comes off the rear doors as easily as the front ones .... if so i'll pull them off
i'm hoping to use the garage to save doing it outside

Re: Tinting windows
Must admit i had thought about tinting my windows on my X5 a few weeks back, till the wife said i would look like a 'drug dealer'
) so that shelved that idea. But they can look very smart if done properly.

Re: Tinting windows
lmao yeah they can look a little "suspect" but i'm only doing the back doors and the rear 3 in a medium smoke

Re: Tinting windows
Ian, the rear door panels are NOT as simple as the fronts...
The divider / sun shade pull out pillar cover hides a screw fixing... and you WILL destroy the door card if you do not get the pillar cover off & remove the hidden screw.
There is a You-Tube instruction on removing the rear door card. & getting the clip released on the pillar cover.

Re: Tinting windows
Hi Ian
My X came with dark tint after the B pillar but like you I fill the boot with dogs. The "nose art" is harder to remove from the tint than glass especially when its hot and its gone crusty (sorry boys and girls)
So I experimented putting cling film on the rear windows and it works just peel it off and replace once a week

Re: Tinting windows
I will definitely be getting the tougher film to stop the hounds scratching it
i actually thing if done properly and in the right tint it looks really good on the x5 so while i can claim to the Mrs that its for the health and well-being of the dogs .....really it's because i'm a tart
